Good news! Three of my recent monotypes were accepted into the 8th Annual East End Art Guild Juried Show. Rafael Trelles, a well known surrealist artist, was one of the three jurors. Word has it there was lengthy discussion on the merits of each entry; only 53 were accepted. The show hangs in January 2007 in Humacao, Puerto Rico.

Buenas noticias! Tres de los monotipos recientes fueron aceptados en la 8va Exhibicion Anual del Gremio Artistico del Este. Uno de los tes jueces era Rafael Trelles, un pintor del surrealismo. Me dicen que hubo mucho discusion sobre el merito de cada pieza; solo aceptaron 53 obras. La Exhibicion abre en enero de 2007 en Humacao (Puerto Rico).

'Casa Alcaldia de Ceiba' ('Ceiba Mayor's Office') is the third watercolor of the Landmark Challenge I mentioned earlier. It's 4"x6" on Arches 140# Cold Press. Fortunately these are getting faster as I do more since architecture isn't really my thing.

In each town throughout Puerto Rico, there is the Casa Alcaldia. Ours is located on the central plaza, just behind the Church and next to the Asamblea Municipal. Because it's so hot here, windows are shuttered and there are always a few air conditioning units anchored in some of them.

There are actually two flag poles, one each for the Puerto Rican and United States flags. Puerto Rico, for those of you who don't know, is part of the United States since 1896. It's a commonwealth; citizens are United States citizens but we do not have a vote in national elections nor do we have representation in Congress other than the Resident Commissioner, who goes to Washington to petition the attention of the US government. However he has no vote in Congress. We are 4 million U.S. citizens without a single vote.

'Casa Alcaldia de Ceiba' es la tercera de las acuarelas del Reto de los Sitios de Interes que mencione en el blog antes. Mide 4"x6" en papel Arches 140# Cold Press con acuarelas marca Daniel Smith. Afortunadamente se estan saliendo rapidos porque pintar arquitectura no es mi sujeto favorito.

En cada pueblo de Puerto Rico se encuentra una Casa Alcaldia. La nuestra esta ubicada en la plaza central, detras de la Iglesia Catolica y al lado de la Asamblea Municipal. A causa del calor extremo aqui, las ventanas se quedan con postigos cerrados y siempre hay algunos cajas de aire acondicionado amarradas en algunas de ellas.

Actualmente en frente hay dos astas para las banderas de Puerto Rico y los Estados Unidos. Puerto Rico, para los que no lo sepan, es parte de los Estados Unidos desde 1896. Es un estado libre asociado; los ciudadanos tienen cuidadania americana pero no tenemos un voto en elecciones nacionales ni tampoco tenemos representacion en Congreso, solo un delegado que presenta los deseos del pueblo de Puerto Rico ante el gobierno americano. Sin embargo el delegado tampoco tiene un voto en el Congreso. Somos 4 milliones de ciudadanos sin ni un solo voto.

Playing with watercolor and scraps of mingeisha awagami paper, I've created some tiny abstracts. I had accidently placed a sheet of this wonderful paper on my inking slab, not aware that I'd inadvertently made a monoprint. With this ghostly image I was ready to trash the paper (not useable for my normal printmaking) ... but thought to experiment with the shapes left by the ink residue... Here are some of the resulting

Jugando con acuarela and pedazos de papel mingeisha awagami, hice unos abstratos pequenos. Sin saberlo puse una hoja de este papel tan maravillo en el vidro para hechar tinta, haciendo un monotipo sin intentarlo. Con este imagen liviano en el papel era para votarlo por no poder usarlo para mi estilo de linocut... pero pense en experimentar con los contornos dejado por la tinta... y aqui tienen algunos resultados!

I've signed up for a Landmark Challenge in the www.WetCanvas.com watercolor forum. The object is to paint local landmarks from our own community, things people don't necessarily see. I have a commitment of one painting every two weeks for a year, 26 paintings in all.

Here are my entries #1 and #2, both 6"x4" on Arches Cold #140 paper:

The first is the Municipal Assemby, situated behind the church on the plaza, next to the Mayor's office. Here the citizens of Ceiba have their town meetings. It's a very narrow building, complete with handcap ramp.

The second is the Catholic church that sits in the middle of Ceiba's plaza. There is actually a white iron fence that encircles it but artistic license permits me to remove it. The buildings in Puerto Rico are always being re-painted, nice bright colors which fade quickly in the strong tropical sun. These buildings may or may not be this color in a year or two since the color schemes often change with each painting.

Me aliste en un Reto de Sitios Locales de Interes en el Forum de Acuarela en el internet forum de www.WetCanvas.com. El objetivo es pintar sitios de interes locales de nuestras comunidades, los sitios que mucha gente jamas goce. Tengo un compromiso de una pintura cada two semanas por un ano, 26 obras en total.

Aqui tienen mis entradas 1 y 2:

La primera es la Asamblea Municipal, colocado en la plaza atras de la iglesia y al lado de la Alcaldia. Aqui los ceibenos discuten los asuntos del pueblo. Es un edificio con entrada estrecha que incluye la rampa para los impedidos.

La segunda es la Iglesia Catolica que domina el centro de la plaza de Ceiba. En realidad hay una cerca de metal blanca pero para verla mejor la quite (segun la famosa 'licencia artistica'). Los edificios de Puerto Rico siempre estan de pintar, con colores chocantes y coloridos que se distinen rapidamente por el sol tropical tan fuerte. Estes edificios pueden ser or no este mismo color dentro de uno o dos anos a causa de que los colores siempre cambian con cada nueva aplicacion de pintura.

I am a big fan of ancient Mayan images and have just finished cutting this jaguar out of linoleum, ready for proofing... This particular jaguar is very famous. The original is part of the Dance Platform of the Eagles in Chichen Itza (Mexico) and is from the Toltec-Mayan culture. The jaguar is symbolic of the military order of the Jaguar.

This image was especially meaningful for me since I had a jaguar encounter one morning years ago. While at Tikal, I had gone out alone to enjoy the site before the majority of tourists came in by plane. In the early morning ground fog, ahead of me on the path, I could just make out the form of a large cat, very mystical, not threatening. The jaguar looked at me for a minute and then faded into the mist. That image has haunted me for years...

Siempre he estado muy aficionada de los imagenes de los Mayas de la antiguidad. Acabo de terminar los cortes en linoleo de este jaguar. Manana lo voy a probar... El imagen viene de la Plataforma de las Aguilas en Chichen Itza (Mejico) y es de la cultura Tolteca-Maya. El jaguar es simbolo del orden militar del Jaguar.

Este proyecto me era significativo por el recuerdo de un encuentro hace anos con un jaguar por la madrugada. Durante una visita a Tikal me fui sola a gozar el sitio antes de la llegada de turistas por avion. Caminando por el sendero vi por la nublina madrugal la forma de un gato grande, muy mistico y nada asombroso. El jaguar me miro un minuto y se desvanecio en la bruma. Este imagen me ha obsesionada por anos...

Such a hiatus from my blog... After the Summit we had a wonderful, lengthy visit from daughter #1 and her clan from Australia, then a visit from our son and his group. Finally things are back to normal and I am back in my studio once again...

Here, finally, is a proof for 'Shy', my first woodblock. I think the step on the right looks odd so will add wood putty and finish the edge. Also I will mull over the doorway (vertical lines at the top) and will probably eliminate those since they don't read right.

Tanto tiempo sin abrir mi blog... Despues del Baren Summit tuvimos una visita larga de mi hija mayor and su familia (de Australia), luego una visita de nuestro hijo y los suyos. Al fin todo esta ya normal y estoy habitando mi estudio de nuevo...

Aqui, finalmente, hay una prueba para 'Shy' ('Timida'), mi prima corte en madera. Pienso que parece un poco raro la escalera a la derecha abajo por eso voy a repararla con un poco de masilla para madera y cortarla de nuevo. Tambien no estoy muy satisfecha con la entrada (lineas verticales en la parte de arriba) y probablemente la voy a eliminar porque no me dice nada.

My very first woodcuts... The Baren Summit has created another woodcut fan. These still need to be finished and proofed. They were started at the gathering and should be finished and ready for printing Sunday... I hope!!!

Homeland Security at work...

While I was at the Baren Summit in Vancouver (WA) I decided to buy printmaking supplies at McClain's and bring them back in my suitcase to save a bit on postage. I returned home late last night and already knew my bag had been searched since I received the standard TSA (Transportation Security Administration) literature on top of my clothes and toiletries. But imagine my surprise when I saw the TSA/Homeland Security tape on the solar plates' protective cardboard. The plates were at the very bottom of a very overweight (58 pounds) suitcase full of knives, inks, gouges and asundry printmaking items. It revives my faith in the anti-terrorist airport screening!

Mientras asisti la reunion del grupo Baren en Vancouver (estado de Washington), compre varios implementos y placas solares en McClain's trayendolos en mi equipaje para evitar el costo de enviarlos por correo. Regrese anoche y supe que abrieron mi maleta porque encontre la literatura usual del Administracion de Seguridad de Transportacion (TSA) colocada encima de mi ropa. Pero imaginate mi sorpresa cuando vi la cinta de TSA/Homeland Security en el carton protectiva de mis placas solares. Las placas estaban colocadas en el fondo de mi maleta (de sobrepeso), tambien llena de toda clase de implementos para grabado relieve. Este me restablece mi fe en el personal de seguridad anti-terrorista de nuestros aeropuertos!

The Baren Summit fast approaches. My suitcase is more than half full of essentials ... another artist will know what I mean ... I leave tomorrow morning, wending my way to the Pacific Northwest via New Mexico. Minor decisions such as what clothing I take will be decided by what comes out of the dryer this evening but the important art supplies are lovingly stowed.

The Baren Summit... just hearing the words gives me a thrill. For two years I have been waiting for this gathering of woodblock artists. I know their work, read their blogs and emails, and, finally, I will be in the same room with them in 'sponge mode', ready to learn and absorb and share.

El dicho 'Baren Summit' pronto esta aqui. Mi maleta ya esta casi llena de los esenciales... qualquier artista sabra de lo que hablo... Salgo manana por la manana hacia el Noroeste Pacifico pasando por Nuevo Mejico. Los asuntos triviales como que ropa de llevar hare esta noche pero las provisiones artisticas ya estan empacados con mucho cuidado.

'Baren Summit'... con solo oir las palabras me emocionan. Ya son dos anos que espero este reunion de artistas de grabado en relieve. Conozco su trabajo artistico, leo sus blogs y correspondencia email, y, finalmente, estare en el mismo sitio junto a ellos en 'modo esponja', lista para aprender and absorber and compartir.

Translating drawings into a monochromatic linocut can often change the image dramatically. A friend asked me where I get my ideas. I have a studio full of drawings and photographs that are waiting for some sort of creative urge. My major problem is living long enough to use them all!

Here we have the original idea, done in a life drawing session years ago, and the linoleum with the first cut. And viola... the finished product: 'Evening' printed with Daniel Smith oil-based burnt umber ink on flecked mulberry, edition size 50 (my piece for the recent Barenforum.org print exchange).

Transformando un dibujo a un linocut monocromatico a veces resulta en un cambio dramatico. Un amigo me pregunto de donde viene mis inspiraciones. Tengo un estudio lleno de dibujos y fotos que estan esperando un impulso creativo. Mi mayor problema es vivir suficiente anos para utilizarlos todos!

Aqui tenemos el idea original, un dibujo de una sesion de hace unos anos, y el linoleo con el primer corte. Y de repente tenemos el grabado completo: 'Evening (Anochecer)' usando tinta oleo Daniel Smith (burnt umber) en papel mulberry salpicado con gris, edicion de 50 (mi contribucion al intercambio de grabados de Barenforum.org).

A varied edition of "Warrior Spirit", a print from a past www.barenforum.org exhange ... Because I had a sheet of Mexican bark paper, I decided to pull four of these. I found bark paper doesn't tear in a pleasant fashion, so beware if you plan to use this paper for smaller prints.

Una edicion variada de 'Warrior Spirit', un grabado que hice para un intercambio pasado de www.barenforum.org. Porque me quede una hoja de papel de corteza mejicana, decidi sacar cuatro del imagen. Descubri que ese papel de corteza no rompe facilmente por eso les advierto que si planean usar este papel para grabados pequenos... tengan cuidado.

Playing with monoprints on styrofoam, as a result of an 'original' print exchange on WetCanvas!, I found to be fun and challenging. On a smooth piece of styrofoam, I used a ballpoint pen to make incisions. Then the plate is inked (I used Akua-Kolors) and printed. Here is the well-used plate after about 30 pulls...

En en un pedazo de stryofoam plano (sin marcas) hice incisiones con un boligrafo. Entonces pinte la placa con tinta Akua-Kolor y hice el grabado. Aqui tiene la placa bien gastada despues de unos 30 grabados ...

The latest linocuts, really E-Z Cut, are packed and really to mail out for the most recent www.printmakers.info print exchange. I had planned a larger edition but wasn't very careful with the plate, which is softer and more pliable than an eraser... Lo and behold, it is now in two pieces so this is an edition of 25. I'm not particularly fond of E-Z Cut for exactly that reason: it's too easy to cut. I'll use up the rest of what I have but probably won't buy it again.

Los ultimos linocuts (en verdad E-Z Cut) estan empacados y listos para el correo para el intercambio mas recien de grabados del www.printmakers.info. Tenia la intencion de una edicion mas grande pero no cuide bien la placa (que es mucho mas suave que una goma de borrar). Asi entonces este es una edicion de solo 25. No estoy muy encantada de E-Z Cut for exactamente esta razon: es demasiado facil cortar. Usare lo que me quede pero probablemente no lo comparare jamas.

In planning a linocut flower series I've been doing some small floral studies. It's been helpful to better understand the structure of the blossoms.

Playing with a medieval drawing technique of silverpoint, I came up with this frangipangi blossom. The technique is very mesmerizing, not for the impatient artist. And erasing is not an option causing some quick thinking on how to incorporate unintended lines.

Jugando con la tecnica medieval de dibujar con plata, hize este flor tropical frangipangi. La tecnica es sumamente hipnotica, no apto para el artista impaciente. Y borrar no es una opcion lo cual causa soluciones en como incorporar lineas no intencionales.

The last three days I've been up at El Yunque Rainforest. Tomorrow is the last day for the 10th year celebration of the Visitors' Center. My prints have been well-received. And I've found the time away from the studio has let me play with colored pencil, the least messy medium to take along while spending the day in my booth ...

Tropical flowers have been occupying me this last week, working on a photography commision. The clients have a beautiful 3 acre yard, unlike my unkempt, wild 3 acres. Here are some ... which may turn up as linocuts or paintings later!

Flores tropicales me han ocupado esta semana pasada, trabajando en una comision fotografica. Los clientes tienen un jardin bellisima de 3 cuerdas, el opuesto de mis 3 cuerdas media salvajes. Aqui hay algunas ... que seguramente saldran como grabados linocuts o pinturas en el futuro!
