Monotype/monotipo, 'Bamboo' ('Bambu'), 4"x8" / 10cmx20cm

Another abstract piece done with Akua-Kolor inks for the summer exhibition at the Centro de Arte in Humacao, Puerto Rico. I'm busy framing the pieces today and hope to have them finished by Wednesday, when we have friends visiting from Washington state.

Otra pieza hecha con tinta Akua-Kolor para la exhibicion del verano en el Centro de Arte de Humacao, Puerto Rico. Estoy ocupadisima enmarcando las piezas hoy y espero que las tenga terminadas para el miercoles, cuando tenemos visita un unos buen amigos del estado de Washington.

I've been going through works for the exhibition and decided to include this one. Placing rice paper on a dirty inking area, then pulling the paper off, there were some delightful sepia shapes that needed a little enhancing with brushed-on Akua-Kolor inks. I then pasted the rice paper onto a 90# watercolor paper .. and that's that! An abstract!

Revisando obras para la exhibicion, decidi incluir a esta. Poniendo una hoja de papel japonesa de arroz en el vidrio sucio que uso para la tinta, luego sacando el papel, asomaban unas formas color sepia que necesitaban un aumento con tintas Akua-Kolor aplicadas con un pincel. Entonces pegue el papel a otro de acuarela (90#) ... y ya! Un abstrato!

When living in Jordan we frequently went to Petra. Just outside the old Nabatean ruins there was a lovely government guesthouse (1980s). From the back I sketched this simple stone dwelling, nothing like the elaborate ruins inside the valley. The original drawing is reversed because, when I was drawing on the plate, I forgot to take that printmaking idiosyncrasy into account.

Cuando viviamos en Jordania frecuentabamos a Petra. En la mera afuera de las ruinas Nabateas habia una lindisima posada gubernamental (en los anos 80). Desde el parte atras dibuje una vivienda humilde, nada como las ruinas tan elaboradas dentro del valle. El dibujo original esta al revez porque cuando estaba dibujando en la placa, olvide de considerer este fenomeno con el grabado.

This is an example of a monotype. All the ink was brushed and blotted directly on a smooth piece of plexiglass and then transferred to watercolor paper using the press. The gold leaf was added and then it was run through the press a second time.

Este es un ejemplo de un monotipo. Toda la tinta fue brochada y manchada directamente en un pedazo de plexi liso y luego transferido a papel acuarela usando la 'press' (por favor, alguien, dime como se dice 'press' en castellano). El pan de oro fue anadido y el papel fue pasado una segunda vez.

Yesterday Jen asked for an explanation between a monotype and a monoprint. It's a great question since a lot of artists, especially non-printmakers, use the term interchangeably.

All monoprints and monotypes are unique and one-of-a-kind, thus 'mono' ('one'). If a printmaker decides to give it an edition number it would be 1/1.

A monoprint uses a plate which has some kind of permanent markings on it which can be repeated over and over, always looking the same regardless of ink or paper used. Using that plate the artist will then add more paint or ink. With a monoprint, because of those permanent markings, it is easy to run a series looks similar although each individual print is unique and cannot be repeated exactly.

In the case of my ‘garita’ monoprint, the garita image is from a woodcut. It can be repeated over and over. In this particular example, I pulled a second and third print without re-inking. Thus I had a ghost print to which I added watercolor.

A monotype uses a smooth, unmarked plate or surface, and the work is created on it (brushed, rolled, painted). Because the plate has no permanent information (cuts, scratches, etchings) there is nothing that can be repeated in any subsequent pieces.

Ayer Jen me pedio una explicacion entre monotipo y monoprint. Es una pregunta sumamente buena porque muchos artistas, especialmente los que no hacen grabado, los transposen muy confundidas.

Todos los monoprints y monotipos son unicos y por eso se usa ‘mono’ (‘uno’). Si el artista decide indicar la edicion el numero que llevara seria 1/1.

Con un monoprint se usa una placa que lleva algun tipo de marcas permanentes en ella que se puede repetir una y otra vez, siempre pareciendo lo mismo a pesar de la tinta o el papel. Usando esta placa el artista sigue anadiendo mas pintura or tinta. Con un monoprint, a causa de esas marcas permanentes, es facil hacer una serie que parece similar aunque cada grabado sigue unico y no se puede repetirlo exactamente.

En el caso de mi ‘garita’ monoprint, la imagen de la garita fue hecha de un bloque de madera. Hice un grabado de segunda y tercera generacion sin echar mas tinta en ellos. Entonces tenia un gradado ‘fantasma’ al cual anadi acuarela.

Con un monotipo se usa una placa lisa sin ninguna marca y todo el trabajo del artista esta hecha en la misma placa (brochado, allando con rodillo, pintado). Por el hecho de que la placa no lleva informacion permanente (cortes, cinceladas, grabado a agua fuerte) no hay nada que se puede repetir en piezas siguientes.

'Guardian Guerrero' (monotipo con acuarela, 17cmx12cm) colgara junto a tres mas monotipos mios en la exhibicion "Imagenes de Nuestras Reflexiones" en el Centro de Arte Angel "Lito" Peña de Humacao. Esta exhibicion celebra el Dia de la Mujer (Marzo). Si estes en Puerto Rico entonces, pasen por alla... Estara desde el 10 de marzo hasta el 21 de abril, 2007.

Good news! Three of my recent monotypes were accepted into the 8th Annual East End Art Guild Juried Show. Rafael Trelles, a well known surrealist artist, was one of the three jurors. Word has it there was lengthy discussion on the merits of each entry; only 53 were accepted. The show hangs in January 2007 in Humacao, Puerto Rico.

Buenas noticias! Tres de los monotipos recientes fueron aceptados en la 8va Exhibicion Anual del Gremio Artistico del Este. Uno de los tes jueces era Rafael Trelles, un pintor del surrealismo. Me dicen que hubo mucho discusion sobre el merito de cada pieza; solo aceptaron 53 obras. La Exhibicion abre en enero de 2007 en Humacao (Puerto Rico).
