'Day Lily' ~ 8"x"10" ~ scratchboard drawing
'Lirio' ~ 20cm x 25cm ~ dibujo en scratchboard

It dawns on me that it's been months since I've written here.  I've been exploring a new art medium:  scratchboard.  It's another approach to drawing.  Instead of pencil or pen I make marks on a board covered with black ink.  It can be done on paper but I prefer the black boards made by Ampersand.  Where I scratch with the knife I get white lines.  More about this later.

This day lily was done for the recent New Mexico Art League silent auction fund raiser.  It is now in a private collection and I do hope the new owners enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Scratchboard ~ 6"x4" / 15cm x 10cm

Anther scratchboard piece... Since I've worked so long with one color in my printmaking, I find this medium very easy. I started doing this because I wanted to practice fine lines for possible engraved woodcuts but I'm finding I like the immediacy of this... and no printing or editioning later.

Monotype/monotipo, 'Montana' (5"x7" / 13cmx18cm).

I've been going through works for the exhibition and decided to include this one. Placing rice paper on a dirty inking area, then pulling the paper off, there were some delightful sepia shapes that needed a little enhancing with brushed-on Akua-Kolor inks. I then pasted the rice paper onto a 90# watercolor paper .. and that's that! An abstract!

‘Pineapple’, woodcut, “5x6”, printed on white rice paper with burnt umber Daniel Smith oil-based ink.
The Pineapple War has concluded with a peaceful resolution. I’m very pleased with the results and like the ability to cut fine detail in wood which is much trickier in lino.
Available here.

Disponible aqui.

My printing of the shell woodcut (from a couple of weeks ago) has proven to be another of those serendipitous events. I had proofed with black ink and, a day later, started to print with a red/yellow/umber combination. In printing I found the first dozen had some of the black ink coming through. I decided to send these 12 to Rob Viana for the 4th print swap and call it a night.

Today I started printing again but the black is not not so evident ... and I find I like the first batch so I will roll some ink on the wood and see if I will be lucky again... You decide which you prefer! I've decided not to bother to edition this print and just have fun with it.
