This book has an interesting format. Originally the book was a project in which Eppink produced 101 prints using the various printmaking processes known and then gave a brief description to accompany each of those prints. It was presented as a boxed set, an edition of only 15. While those 15 sets are no longer available outside of museums and private collections, we have a published book which reproduces those prints with their explanations.

The upside for this book is that there is a simple explanation of each of the printmaking processes: various types of woodcuts, intaglio, etc. It was a bit more expansive on the different types than most printmaking books I've seen, making it a good reference book for any printmaker that wishes to expand their library.

The downside is it was published in 1971 and since that time there have been big developments in many newer printmaking techniques. In addition, a number of his print descriptions now have a newer vocabulary. Also don't expect a how-to book on the processes.

Emily Carr?

I swear Emily Carr haunted my knives for my latest woodcut.  Don't know who she is?  Then you are definitely not Canadian.  Neither am I but I just recently found her.  I love her trees and somehow I felt her spirit creep into this tiny piece for the Baren 53 print exchange.

Juro que Emily Carr entro mis navajas para este ultimo grabado.  No la conoces?  Entonces es seguro que no eres canadiense.  Ni yo tampoco pero recientemente la conoci.  Me encanta sus arboles y de una manera u otra su espiritu invadio esta pieza pequena para el intercambio de grabado de Baren (53).

Spring is around the corner and I'm having a nostalgic fit for a Northern blooming of tulips, something we don't get down here in the Caribbean, so I've had to make my own.  I find the drama of scratchboard work a nice break from my woodcut relief printmaking but notice that I'm still working monochromatically.  It must be in the genes.

Ya esta acercando la primavera y me siento una gran nostalgia por la floracimiento de tulipanes, algo que no vemos aqui en el Caribe, por eso he tenido que crearlo yo mismo.  Encuentro el drama del medio de 'scratchboard' un buen descanso despues de tanto cortar madera para grabados pero se puede notar que todavia trabajo monocromatico.  Debe ser parte de los genes mios.

Here's a new linocut, 3.75"x6" for a print exchange which has a water theme.  My press bed is frozen up so I'm having to print these with a ball-bearing baren and a spoon since I chose Arches 88, a bit heavy for this method of printing.   I've got 10 more to go for the exchange (46 total) and then I'm golden.

Aqui tienes un nuevo grabado en linoleo, 9.5cm x 15cm, para un intercambio que lleva como tema el agua.  Estoy teniendo problemas con mi 'press' que parece 'congelado' entonces los estoy sacando con un baren tipo ball-bearing y una cuchara de madera.  El razon por esto es que los estoy sacando en un papel Arches 88 que es un poco grueso para este metodo de grabar.  Tengo 10 mas (46 en total) y puedo relajar un poco.

Para los de vos que hablan 'grabado' en castellano, por favor, advisanme cuando no uso la palabra correcta.  Todo mi educacion de grabado ha sido en ingles y el diccionario es inutil con palabras tan especificas.  Mil gracias...

I've been distracted from my art because of family, travel, and the holidays but am now back.  This pastel was a joy to do, especially since I'd been out of the studio these last two months.  What attracts me to the unlovely cactus are the simple shapes and dramatic shadows.   I also think that, even when I paint or use pastels, I think and plan like a black and white printmaker.

The Cities block is mailed off (more about that later) and the prints for another Baren exchange are drying and will be in the mail soon (more about that later also).  I now have a dragon woodcut to design and the almost daily postcard sizes paintings to begin again.

He estado bien distraida a causa de asuntos de familia, mucho viajar, y las fiestas navidenas pero ya estoy de vuelta.  Este pastel fue un placer hacer especialmente porque he estado fuera del estudio esos dos ultimos meses.  Lo que me da la atencion con el cacto tan feo con sus tunas son los contornos sencillos y las sombras dramaticas.  Tambien pienso que aun cuando pinto o uso pasteles pienso y planeo como si fuera un grabado en blanco y negro.

El bloque en madera para el proyecto de las Ciudades esta mandado por correo (mas sobre esto luego) y los grabados para otra intercambio del Baren se estan secando y pronto estaran enviados (mas sobre esto luego tambien).  Ahora tengo un bloque para el ano del dragon para disenar y tambien reempezar mis estudios diarios.

For the Year of the Rabbit I was heavily inspired by printmaker Diana Moll’s blog with her menagerie of adorable rabbits.  How can one do better  than that…  so this became a cuddly rabbit waiting to see if you would try to pick him up.  I actually wanted to title it ‘Year of the Moll-haired Rabbit’ but realized I don’t know what a mohair looks like and I didn’t want insult Diana’s furry friends.

This is the first time in ages that I kept the edition size down to exactly the number in the exchange.  I like the idea of them being special and limited to only my Baren friends.   Also I love the idea that this block is now cancelled ... very liberating.

Para el Ano del Conejo me inspiro muchisimo el blog de Diana Moll con su coleccion de conejitos lindos.  Como puede uno mejorar a este...  entonces este es un conejo adorable, esperando a ver si lo recojas para acariciarlo.  En realidad quise titularlo 'Year of the Moll-haired Rabbit' ... un juego de la palabra inglesa 'mohair' que no sale en castellano en ningun sentido ... y tambien como no tengo ningun idea como parece un conejo angora no quise insultar a esos amiguitos de Diana.

Este es la primera vez en mucho tiempo en que hize una edicion exacta para el intercambio.  Me gusta el idea de que son unicos limitados a solo mis amigos de Baren.  Tambien me encanto el idea de que este bloque ya esta cancelado...  me siento libre.

A large number of Baren printmakers from around the world are involved in a fund raising for the victims of the recent Japanese earthquake and tsunami.  The prints are available for purchase here.  This is mine.  In planning this print I wanted it to be symbolic of hope for Japan rather than dwell on the tragedy of the recent earthquake and tsunami. The black fan symbolizes the honor of the Japanese people, the cranes stand for hope and tranquility, and the cherry blossoms for the eternal beauty of nature.

Varios artistas del grabado (del foro Baren) desde todo el mundo estan involucrados en un proyecto para acumular fondos para las victimas del terremoto y tsunami recien en el Japon.  Los gradados resultantes estan de venta aqui.  Este es el mio.  En planear este grabado en linoleo quise un simbolo de la esperanza para Japon en vez de pensar en lo tragico del terremoto y tsunami de este ano.  El abanico negro simboliza el honor del pueblo japones; las grullas, la esperanza y tranquiliada; y los flores del cerezo, la belleza eterna de la naturaleza.

I've finished printing my contribution to the Baren Forum Exchange #49.  They go in the mail today.  I've been working with Zentangle images and this is the second of a series of ten.  The guiro is a typical tropical musical instrument, made out of a gourd and incised with ridges.  To make a rhythmic sound, the musician uses a stick and rubs along the side, making a loud rasping.

Acabo de terminar mi contribucion al intercambio 49 del foro de Baren.  Los metere in el correo hoy.  He estado trabajando con imagenes tipo Zentangle y este es el segundo de un serie de diez.  El guiro es un instrumento musical tipico en el Caribe.  Se lo hace de una calabaza,inscribiendo en los lados.  Para hacer el ritmo musical, tomen un palito duro raspando el guiro firmamente.

I'm taking a page out of Henry Ford's assembly line idea and working on a series of ten linocuts, all abstracts based on Zentangle sketches I did last fall.  One is already done and the rest are in different stages of completion.  The only way I would be able to finish all ten is to do all of them at once.  


I bought some mounted lino from McClain's, the kind that has black ink on the surface.  Then I glued my patterns on the various blocks, let them dry, and began cutting.  The first was the one for the Baren print exchange 'Loco Motion' .

Estoy tomando una pagina de Henry Ford y su famoso 'assembly line' y estoy trabajando una serie de diez grabados en linoleo, todos abstratos basados en dibujos Zentangle que hice el otono pasado.  Uno ya esta hecho.  Los demas estan en diferentes etapas de ejecucion.  La unica manera en que seria capaz de terminar los diez es hacer todos a la vez.  


Compre algunos linos montado de McClain's, el tipo que lleva tinta negra en la superficie.  Luego pegue mis patrones en los distintos bloques, los deje que se secaron, y empezo a cortar.  El primero fue lo que hice para el intercambio de grabados de Baren, 'Loco Motion'.

I've been having fun with a doodle process called 'Zentangle'.  The recent the Baren Forum print exchange was an open theme and I wanted to do something whimsical so I used one of my recent Zentangle doodles and was pleased at how nicely it converted into a linocut print.  I'm actually working on a series (10 in all) which I will upload as they get finished.

He estado divirtiendome con un proceso de dibujo 'Zentangle'.    El reciente intercambio de grabados del Baren Foro tenia un tema abierto y quise hacer algo caprichoso, asi que use unos de mis disenos, satisfecha de lo bien que se convirtio en una impresion de grabado en linoleo.  En este momento estoy trabajando en una serie (seran 10 en total) que les ensenare cuando los hayan terminado.

I cannot believe it's been six months since I last wrote in my blog so now it's time to remedy that.  In the interim I've learned to do a mezzotint, did an abstract series of linocuts, a few woodcuts, a series of small watercolor abstract studies which will become larger pastel paintings, welcomed another grandchild, made a huge two month US road trip, attended two weddings, among other things ...  So forgive me for not writing in my blog.

I'll explain my chicken in a later blog...  That will keep me on my toes regarding blogging.

No puedo creer que ha sido seis meses desde escribi en mi blog... entonces ya es hora de remediarlo.  En el interine aprendi a hacer mezzotinto, hice una serie de linocut (abstracto), unos pocos grabados en madera, una serie de acuarelas pequenas (estudios de abstracto) que seran pinturas en pastel grandes, di la bienvenida a otro nieto, hice un viaje por auto de dos meses por los EEUU, asisti a dos bodas, entre todo lo demas...  entonces pido mil disculpas por no escribirles en mi blog.


Explicare mi pollo en un blog futuro...  Asi me compromenteria hacerlo.

'The Wonder of It All' ~ 'Lo maravilloso de todo'

After years of being a scuba instructor, I'd never done anything with divers in it... so I took this opportunity with a Baren relief print exchange, the only rules being that it be a three color reducton relief print on paper sized 10"x7.5".  I tried to express that moment when the new diver is overtaken by the wonder of the experience, now fearless, ready to let go of the instructor's hand.  I apologize to responsible divers everywhere as the other two are not very good buddies, a little too far apart but it was necessary for the composition... 

A reduction print is created from one piece of wood. Since I didn't want any white, the first color pass was not cut into at all. Then, for the violet, all the water area was cut away, the wood was inked and registered on top of the solid turquoise. For the last color, all divers, fish, and most of the reef were cut away, the wood was inked and registered on top of the previous two colors. 

We printmakers fondly use the term 'suicide print' for this method since it is so easy to cut too much or, much worse, start with a set edition number in mind and come out with only a few that are properly registered. Because I needed 31, I started with 51 and ended with 43 that I'm proud of... The others are in my 'circular file', better known as the waste basket.

Despues de anos de ser instructora de buceo, nunca habia hecho nada con buzos en mi arte...  entonces tome esta oportunidad con un intercambio de Baren, las unicas reglas siendo que sea un grabado en relieve de reduccion de tres colores en papel tamano 25cm por 19 cm.  Quise expresar aquel momento en cuando el novato esta tan encantado por la maravilla de la experiencia, ya sin miedo, listo para soltar la mano del instructor.  Disculpas a todos los buzos responsables en que dos de ellos no son buenos companeros, siendo un poco lejos uno del otro...  pero fue necesario para la composicion.

Una impresion reduccion es creada de un solo pedazo de madera.  Como no deseaba tener nada blanco entonces el primer paso de color no llevaba ninguin corte.  Luego para la violeta, todo el area de agua fue cortado, la madera fue entintada y registrada encima de la turquesa solida. Para el ultimo color, los buzos, los peces, y la mayor parte del arrecife fueron cortados, la madera fue entintada y registrada encima de los anteriores dos colores.  

Nosotros los que hacemos grabados carinosamente utilizamos la palabra 'suicidio' para este metodo porque es tan facil cortar demasiado o, peor, comenzar con una edicion fija en la mente y salir con solo unas pocas que son registradas apropiadamente.  Como me hacian falta 31, comence con 51 y termine con 43 que me enorgullecen...  Los demas estan en mi archivo 'circular', mejor conocido como el basurero.

Anther scratchboard piece... Since I've worked so long with one color in my printmaking, I find this medium very easy. I started doing this because I wanted to practice fine lines for possible engraved woodcuts but I'm finding I like the immediacy of this... and no printing or editioning later.

Otra obra hecha en scratchboard... Ya que he trabajado tanto tiempo monocromaticamente en grabado, encuentro este medio muy facil. Empece el scratchboard porque quise practicar cortando lineas finitas para grabados pero descubri que me gusta la rapidez de trabajar asi... y nada de imprinta y ediciones luego.

New Mexico has a magic place called Bosque de Apache National Wildlife Refuge where each fall thousands upon thousands of birds (sandhill cranes, Arctic geese, myriad species of ducks) gather to winter. Feeding birds may erupt in explosions of wings at a moments notice and, at dusk, flight after flight of geese and cranes return to roost in the marshes. It's an awesome sight which should be experienced and was my inspriation.

This simple little black and white woodcut was done for the SSNW09 print exchange, a twice annually exchange celebrating the solstice.

En el estado de Nuevo Mexico (EEUUA) hay un sitio magico llamado El Refugio Nacional del Bosque de Apache a lo cual millares de pajaros migran cada otono (grullas sandhill, gansos articos, una variedad de patos) para pasar el invierno. De golpe habran explosiones de alas y, a la nochecer, vuelo tras vuelo de gansos y grullas vuelven para descansar en los pantanos. Es tan impresionante verlo y me inspiro.

Este grabado sencillo en blanco y negro fue hecho para el intercambio de grabados del SSNW09, lo cual occure dos veces al ano para celebrar el solsticio.

I continue my love affair with Alaska. Our recent trip resulted in thousand of photos which I keep sorting through, making decisions what to do next. Thank goodness for digital cameras and laptops. I couldn't afford to take 100 photos of a bear doing next to nothing.

This is my Baren Exchange #42 contribution. The only requirement was the paper size: 3"x9" or 7.5 x 23 cm' woodcut so I decided to do another 'architectural' piece. The historic Russian Orthodox Church (Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel) is actually a rebuilt version of the original that burnt down in 1966. It's rather crowded in by all the other buildings but it still shows beautifully. I rather like how the print came out.

Sigo con mi romance con Alaska. Nuestro viaje recien resulto en miles de fotos las cuales continuamente estoy revisando, haciendo decisiones de que hago proximo. Bendito que haya cameras digitales y computadoras. Nunca podria tomar 100 fotos del mismo oso haciendo casi nada.

Este es mi contribucion para el Intercambio No. 42 del Baren. El unico requisito fue el tamano del papel: 3"x9" o sea 7.5 cm x 23 cm... entonces decidi hacer otro grabado en madera 'estilo arquitecto'. La iglesia historica de los Rusos Ortodoxos (Catedral de San Miguel el Arcangel) realmente es una replica del original que se quemo en 1966. Estoy contento como salio este grabado.

My newest Alaskan inspired print actually came from a roof in downtown Juneau but this woodcut is part of a series of cardinal directions so the title contains the word 'north'. This, for me traveling from Puerto Rico, is very North. I might not have noticed this salmon weather vane but there was one of Alaska's many ravens sitting below it. What could be more iconic for Alaska than a salmon and raven. In fact, I have another woodcut in the works... a raven (which I must have been in another life).

El grabado mas recien mio actualmente viene de un techo en el centro del pueblo de Juneau (Alaska) pero, como este grabado es parte de una serie de las direcciones cardinales, el titlo contiene la palabra 'norte'. Este, para mi viajando de Puerto Rico, es sumamente norte. Quizas no hubiera visto esta veleta de un salmon pero habia un cuervo sentado abajo. Que pudiera ser icono para Alaska que un salmon y un cuervo. En realidad, estoy cortando otro grabado en madera... un cuervo (que pienso que fuera en otra vida).

In May we took a trip to Alaska's historic Gold Rush area. I was awed, especially by the difficulty of access to this vast northern area. We went on one of the Cruise West ships and, because it was one of the small ships, we were able to go to areas that are inaccessible to the gigantic cruise lines. In Tracy's Arm we saw a small seaplane going who know where...

En mayo hicimos un viaje a Alaska, la area de el dicho 'Gold Rush' donde descubriyeron oro hace anos atras. Me impresiono muchisimo, especialmente la dificultad del aceso a la mayoria del esta area nortena. Fuimos en un barco de Cruise West and, por ser uno de los cruceros pequenos, pudieramos ir a areas inacesibles a los cruceros gigantescos. En la area de Tracy's Arm vimos un avioneta yendo a no se donde...
