This book has an interesting format. Originally the book was a project in which Eppink produced 101 prints using the various printmaking processes known and then gave a brief description to accompany each of those prints. It was presented as a boxed set, an edition of only 15. While those 15 sets are no longer available outside of museums and private collections, we have a published book which reproduces those prints with their explanations.

The upside for this book is that there is a simple explanation of each of the printmaking processes: various types of woodcuts, intaglio, etc. It was a bit more expansive on the different types than most printmaking books I've seen, making it a good reference book for any printmaker that wishes to expand their library.

The downside is it was published in 1971 and since that time there have been big developments in many newer printmaking techniques. In addition, a number of his print descriptions now have a newer vocabulary. Also don't expect a how-to book on the processes.

Here's a new linocut, 3.75"x6" for a print exchange which has a water theme.  My press bed is frozen up so I'm having to print these with a ball-bearing baren and a spoon since I chose Arches 88, a bit heavy for this method of printing.   I've got 10 more to go for the exchange (46 total) and then I'm golden.

Aqui tienes un nuevo grabado en linoleo, 9.5cm x 15cm, para un intercambio que lleva como tema el agua.  Estoy teniendo problemas con mi 'press' que parece 'congelado' entonces los estoy sacando con un baren tipo ball-bearing y una cuchara de madera.  El razon por esto es que los estoy sacando en un papel Arches 88 que es un poco grueso para este metodo de grabar.  Tengo 10 mas (46 en total) y puedo relajar un poco.

Para los de vos que hablan 'grabado' en castellano, por favor, advisanme cuando no uso la palabra correcta.  Todo mi educacion de grabado ha sido en ingles y el diccionario es inutil con palabras tan especificas.  Mil gracias...

I've always wanted to do a linocut valentine but there are so many fabulous traditional ones out there so I needed something more complex, more like the human heart is complex.  This print is another of the series (10 in all) linocuts based on abstract Zentangle designs I created last year, finally coming to life.  This print is part of a semi-annual Solstice Exchange among international printmakers.

Siempre quise hacer un linocut para San Valentin pero hay tantos imagenes fabulosos y tradicionales por todos partes entonces tenia que hacer algo mas complicado,  complicado como el corazon humano es complicado.  Este impresion es otro de la serie (10 en total) basada en disenos abstratos tipo Zentangle que hize el ano pasado, al fin dandos sus frutos.  Este es parte de un intercambio semi-anual del Solsticio entre grabadores internacionales.

A large number of Baren printmakers from around the world are involved in a fund raising for the victims of the recent Japanese earthquake and tsunami.  The prints are available for purchase here.  This is mine.  In planning this print I wanted it to be symbolic of hope for Japan rather than dwell on the tragedy of the recent earthquake and tsunami. The black fan symbolizes the honor of the Japanese people, the cranes stand for hope and tranquility, and the cherry blossoms for the eternal beauty of nature.

Varios artistas del grabado (del foro Baren) desde todo el mundo estan involucrados en un proyecto para acumular fondos para las victimas del terremoto y tsunami recien en el Japon.  Los gradados resultantes estan de venta aqui.  Este es el mio.  En planear este grabado en linoleo quise un simbolo de la esperanza para Japon en vez de pensar en lo tragico del terremoto y tsunami de este ano.  El abanico negro simboliza el honor del pueblo japones; las grullas, la esperanza y tranquiliada; y los flores del cerezo, la belleza eterna de la naturaleza.

I've finished printing my contribution to the Baren Forum Exchange #49.  They go in the mail today.  I've been working with Zentangle images and this is the second of a series of ten.  The guiro is a typical tropical musical instrument, made out of a gourd and incised with ridges.  To make a rhythmic sound, the musician uses a stick and rubs along the side, making a loud rasping.

Acabo de terminar mi contribucion al intercambio 49 del foro de Baren.  Los metere in el correo hoy.  He estado trabajando con imagenes tipo Zentangle y este es el segundo de un serie de diez.  El guiro es un instrumento musical tipico en el Caribe.  Se lo hace de una calabaza,inscribiendo en los lados.  Para hacer el ritmo musical, tomen un palito duro raspando el guiro firmamente.

I'm taking a page out of Henry Ford's assembly line idea and working on a series of ten linocuts, all abstracts based on Zentangle sketches I did last fall.  One is already done and the rest are in different stages of completion.  The only way I would be able to finish all ten is to do all of them at once.  


I bought some mounted lino from McClain's, the kind that has black ink on the surface.  Then I glued my patterns on the various blocks, let them dry, and began cutting.  The first was the one for the Baren print exchange 'Loco Motion' .

Estoy tomando una pagina de Henry Ford y su famoso 'assembly line' y estoy trabajando una serie de diez grabados en linoleo, todos abstratos basados en dibujos Zentangle que hice el otono pasado.  Uno ya esta hecho.  Los demas estan en diferentes etapas de ejecucion.  La unica manera en que seria capaz de terminar los diez es hacer todos a la vez.  


Compre algunos linos montado de McClain's, el tipo que lleva tinta negra en la superficie.  Luego pegue mis patrones en los distintos bloques, los deje que se secaron, y empezo a cortar.  El primero fue lo que hice para el intercambio de grabados de Baren, 'Loco Motion'.

I've been having fun with a doodle process called 'Zentangle'.  The recent the Baren Forum print exchange was an open theme and I wanted to do something whimsical so I used one of my recent Zentangle doodles and was pleased at how nicely it converted into a linocut print.  I'm actually working on a series (10 in all) which I will upload as they get finished.

He estado divirtiendome con un proceso de dibujo 'Zentangle'.    El reciente intercambio de grabados del Baren Foro tenia un tema abierto y quise hacer algo caprichoso, asi que use unos de mis disenos, satisfecha de lo bien que se convirtio en una impresion de grabado en linoleo.  En este momento estoy trabajando en una serie (seran 10 en total) que les ensenare cuando los hayan terminado.

The Sierra Club is a sponsor of the Festival del Tinglar in Luquillo at the end of April. It is in celebration of the new ecological nature preserves along the northeast of Puerto Rico where the turtles hatch. Our group from the monthly El Yunque art exhibit will have a booth. I'm not sure art is really a hot seller at this event. There will be a parade (children in turtle costumes), food, and artisans. I wanted to have something for the children... so I came up with this little baby leatherback. In situations like this I have two prices. For adults, they pay full price. If they are accompanied by a child, they only pay $2.00. It always gets some smiles but they also buy.

El Sierra Club es patrocinador de la Festival del Tinglar en Luquillo los fines de abril. Se celebra la nueva reserva natural del corredor ecologico del noreste de Puerto Rico donde crian las tortugas. Nuestro grupo de la exhibicion de arte mensual en El Yunque tendra un puesto. No estoy seguro de que el arte sera en demanda en este evento. Habra un desfile (ninos vestidos de tortugas), comida, y artesanos. Queria tener algo para los ninos... por eso hize este tortuga bebe. The Nibblefest Art Contest on eBay is held every month. My entry this month is 'El Jardin' ('The Garden') which a lot of you have already seen. Nibblefest rules are that each artist put up one piece which follows the theme ('secret garden' this month) and be available for auction at a starting price of 99 cents. Last month's piece went to an artist friend from WetCanvas.com. I'm hoping this month's entry goes to some as yet unknown printmaker out there...

Cada mes en eBay hay un concurso llamado 'Nibblefest Art Contest.' La entrada mia para este mes es 'El Jardin' la que muchos la han visto. Las reglas para Nibblefest son las siguientes: la pieza tiene que ser del tema mensual ('jardin secreto' esta mes), ofrecido en subasta con un precio inicial de 99 centavos (US$). La entrada mia del mes pasado fue ganado por una artista amiga mia de WetCanvas.com. Ojala que la entrada de este mes va a un artista de grabados desconocido por alla...

I'm winding down on the framing for the 'Vamos a Grabar!' ('Let's Print!) show. I have all the Baren Print Exchange #30 in one corner of the living room and 2/3 of the rest patiently waiting the final pieces ... Opening day is June 1 and I still have to do signage and descriptions. Fortunately I don't have to do the catalog! I can't wait until all this is done and I can start creating again... my mind is aboil with ideas.

Ya estoy terminando todos los marcos para la exhibicion 'Vamos a Grabar!'. Tengo todos los del Baren Intercambio de Grabados No. 30 a un lado de la sala de estar and 2/3 del resto esperando pacientamente para las piezas finales ... La apertura es el 1 de junio y todavia me hace faltan las descripciones. Afortunadamente no tengo responsibilidad para el catalogo! No puedo esperar hasta que todo esto esta por terminar y puedo crear de nuevo... tengo tantas ideas bailando por mi mente.

"VAMOS A GRABAR!" ("Let's Print!") is the title for my solo exhibition opening on June 1 at the Centro de Arte Lito Pena in Humacao, Puerto Rico. I am so excited because, after this morning's meeting with the Director, she approved my idea of having an educational exhibition rather than the usual artist's solo show. The show will be up through mid-August and all the children's summer schools and camps in the area will be invited.

Besides my art there will be my personal collection of the Baren Exchange #30, an exchange of 29 international printmakers. I also have two little rooms where there will be photos of the process. While I go through the planning of this event, I'll let you in on it here in my blog! Whew... so much to do!

"VAMOS A GRABAR" es el titulo para mi exhibicion sola que abre el 1 de Junio en el Centro de Arte Lito Pena en Humacao, Puerto Rico. Estoy tan emocionada porque, despues de la reunion con la Directora, ella aprobo me idea de una exposicion educacional en vez de una exhibicion sola de artista, lo usual. El 'show' sera hasta la mitad de agosto y todos los ninos del area que asisten a las escuelas y campamientos de verano seran invitados.

Tendremos, ademas del arte mia, a mi colleccion personal de grabados de artistas de Baren (el Intercambio #30). Tambien tengo dos salas chiquititas para montar unas fotos del proceso. Mientras planeo este evento, contare mas aqui en el blog mio! Hay... tanto que hacer!

It's been a few days... I just finished two more Mayan themed pieces, one in lino and one in all-shina. I love how I am able to make a more delicate piece of work in the wood. I can sense my 'woody' friends at Baren rejoicing at my conversion.

Ha sido unos dias... Acabo de terminar dos piezas mas del tema Maya, una en linoleo y otra en madera all-shina ply. Me encanta como es posible hacer una pieza mas delicada en la madera. Casi puedo oir a mis amigos 'maderistos' diciendo las aleluyas a causa de mi conversion.

Two new woodcuts with Taino Indian designs, both printed with dark umber oil-based ink on rice paper. The Tainos lived in the Caribbean area, including today's Puerto Rico. Now the only evidence of the Taino is in the DNA of the people of the many Caribbean islands.

Dos grabados nuevos en madera con disenos de los indios taino, ambos impresiones hecho con tinta (oleo) castano pardo en papel de arroz. Los tainos vivieron en el area caribeno, incluyendo al Puerto Rico de hoy. Ahora las unicas huellas de los tainos se encuentran en el DNA de los residentes de los muchos pueblos caribenos.

As an artist/printmaker there are times when I do my own art and there are times when I interpret the art of others. From my years of living and travelling in Central America I have felt a deep and almost spiritual connection to Mayan art. There is no need to improve upon it because it is already magnificent...

Como artist/grabadora hay ocasiones en cuando hago mi propia arte y hay las en cuando soy intreprete del arte del ajeno. De mis anos viviendo y viajando por Centro America tengo un afan casi espiritual para el arte Maya. No hay necesidad to mejorarlo porque ya esta magnifico...
