'Open Window' ~ Monoprint ~ 'Ventana abierta'
Woodcut with watercolor ~ Grabado con acuarela
Size / Tamano: 7" x 10" / 18 x 25 cm

I read all Belinda Del Pesco's blog entries. She is a fine printmaker and very active artist who inspires a lot of us, especially with her watercolor enhanced ghost prints.

This is my recent 'From My Window', which I printed without ink on a piece of watercolor paper... a ghost print. Then I had fun going back in with watercolor. Because there were some stray ink marks on the white areas, I used an exacto knife to cut out the colored area and mounted that on a piece of Arches 88.

Entonces me diverti aplicando acuarela.

I'm winding down on the framing for the 'Vamos a Grabar!' ('Let's Print!) show. I have all the Baren Print Exchange #30 in one corner of the living room and 2/3 of the rest patiently waiting the final pieces ... Opening day is June 1 and I still have to do signage and descriptions. Fortunately I don't have to do the catalog! I can't wait until all this is done and I can start creating again... my mind is aboil with ideas.

I played with a solar plate, applying ink as if it were a relief print. I pulled two prints with black ink. The first was almost completely black with tons of ink. The second was a grayer ghost impression, pulled without applying more ink.

Then, with Prismacolor pencils, I added color. With the darker one it came out looking like velvet... the colors with the darkest ink cried out 'Night' (5"x7"), monoprint with colored pencil.

The second ghost print said '... if you are Night, then my name is Day' (5"x7"), monoprint with pencil.

Both prints will be in my upcoming Humacao exhibition as examples of working experimentally in printmaking.

Yesterday Jen asked for an explanation between a monotype and a monoprint. It's a great question since a lot of artists, especially non-printmakers, use the term interchangeably.

All monoprints and monotypes are unique and one-of-a-kind, thus 'mono' ('one'). If a printmaker decides to give it an edition number it would be 1/1.

A monoprint uses a plate which has some kind of permanent markings on it which can be repeated over and over, always looking the same regardless of ink or paper used. Using that plate the artist will then add more paint or ink. With a monoprint, because of those permanent markings, it is easy to run a series looks similar although each individual print is unique and cannot be repeated exactly.

In the case of my ‘garita’ monoprint, the garita image is from a woodcut. It can be repeated over and over. In this particular example, I pulled a second and third print without re-inking. Thus I had a ghost print to which I added watercolor.

A monotype uses a smooth, unmarked plate or surface, and the work is created on it (brushed, rolled, painted). Because the plate has no permanent information (cuts, scratches, etchings) there is nothing that can be repeated in any subsequent pieces.

Monoprint with watercolor - 'Pineapple' (5"x6"). I've been influenced by that wonderfully inventive artist/printmaker, Belinda Del Pesco. I'm saving this to possibly include in the exhibition.

"Thoughts of Red", monotype, using Akua-Kolors on Arches 88 paper.
This was done on plexiglass and then with masking I made the vertical lines. The speckles were actually an accidental bleed-through when doing the masking but, after my initial horror, I decided it 'made' the print. (Private collection... mine.)

'Seashell', woodcut monoprint with watercolor on red mulberry. The image size is 4"x6", the paper size is 8"x10". Originally a proof for a monochromatic edition (which I will pull later), the inspiration for this piece came from Belinda Del Pesco, a wonderful artist who uses everything! So, a la Belinda, I took out the watercolors, did some creative adjustments and mounted it on a rich piece of red mulberry. I'm very pleased with the results!
Available for sale here.

Good news! Three of my recent monotypes were accepted into the 8th Annual East End Art Guild Juried Show. Rafael Trelles, a well known surrealist artist, was one of the three jurors. Word has it there was lengthy discussion on the merits of each entry; only 53 were accepted. The show hangs in January 2007 in Humacao, Puerto Rico.
