I'm pleased to have two scratchboard pieces included in the International Society of Scratchboard Artists (ISSA) Virtual Exhibition 2012. They are 'Bosque Reflections' and 'Vejigante'. Check out the superb work here ...

'Vejigante Boricua'

Scratchboard / 6"x6" ~ 15cm x 15cm

I just finished this.  It is now sprayed with varnish and the question is do I frame it or use one of those cute black plate stands.  I'm leaning toward the latter since it's so small.

The vejigante is super-Puerto Rican.  The clown-like character is a favorite in the festivals, dancing among the crowd, making everyone clap and move to the music.

Acabo de terminar este.  Ya esta rociada con varniz y mi pregunta es debo enmarcarlo o usar uno de esos soportes negros que usen para platos decorativos...  tu sabes del tipo de que hablo. Pienso que sera el soporte porque es tan pequeno.

El vejigante es super-boricua.  El caracter es un poco como payaso, un favorito de todos en los festivales, balando entre la gente y motivando a todos a gozar la musica.

Fortunately I'm staying on track with my '100 days/100 postcard paintings.  Here are days four and five.


Afortunadamente me quedo en buen camino con mis '100 dias/100 pinturas postales'.  Aqui tienes dias cuatro y cinco.

The first is an area heading south between Albuquerque and Las Cruces and the second an area of dunes to the east of El Paso TX.


La primera es un area yendo sur de Albuquerque a Las Cruces (Nuevo Mejico) y la segunda es un area de dunas al este de El Paso (Tejas).

I'm part of a group of artists doing a project of 100 postcard sized paintings in 100 days and, to keep myself honest and on task, I've decided to post them here.  I'm working in pastel because I love it and haven't done it in ages.  Here are the first three:

Soy parte de unos artistas haciendo un proyecto de 100 pinturas tamano postal en 100 dias y, para mantenerme disciplinada y punctual, he decidido ponerlas aqui.  Estoy trabajando en pastel porque me encanta y ha sido mucho tiempo que no lo hace.  Aqui tienes las primera tres:

It dawns on me that it's been months since I've written here.  I've been exploring a new art medium:  scratchboard.  It's another approach to drawing.  Instead of pencil or pen I make marks on a board covered with black ink.  It can be done on paper but I prefer the black boards made by Ampersand.  Where I scratch with the knife I get white lines.  More about this later.

This day lily was done for the recent New Mexico Art League silent auction fund raiser.  It is now in a private collection and I do hope the new owners enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Me di cuenta de que ha sido meses que no les escribo.  Ando explorando un nuevo medio de arte que me fascina:  el scratchboard.  Es otra manera de dibujar.  En vez de lapiz o pluma hago rasgos y rayas en una tabla cubierta de tinta negra.  Se puede hacerlo con papel pero prefiero las tablas preparadas por Ampersand.  Donde marco on una navaja salen lineas blancas.  Mas sobre esto luego.

Este fue hecho para una subasta de la Liga de Arte de Nuevo Mejico.  Ya reside en una coleccion privada y espero que los nuevos duenos esten tan contentos que yo en el hacerlo.

I've had to be strong and forcibly stow my soft pastels. I have several printmaking projects that I dearly wish to get to but find I've been distracted by the quickness and immediacy of playing with pastels. Two pieces from this week...

He tenido que ser fuerte y forzarme a guardar mis pasteles suaves. Hay varios proyectos de grabado que anhelo empezar pero me encuentro destraida por la rapidez y lo inmediato de jugar con pasteles. Dos piezas de esta semana...

'Forest Ravine'...

I painted this little abstract watercolor on Japanese printmaking paper then mounted it on russet mat board. It started as a monoprint but there just enough ink on the paper to make a difference in where I went with my colors, not much more. The painted image is 3"x5.5" on 5"x7" mat board.

'Barranca del Bosque'...

Pinte esta pequeno abstracto en acuarela en papel japones y luego lo monte en cartulina color moreno rojiza. Empezo como un monotipo solo que habia solamente suficiente tinta en el papel para darme una direccion para poner los colores, nada mas. La imagen pintada mide 8cmx14cm y la cartulina 13cmx18cm.

'Mountain Fog' (5"x7") is a mixed media of soft pastels and oils. I started painting this plein aire one evening while looking down from Karr Canyon toward the White Sands area in southern New Mexico. It was done on site with soft pastels and then I worked it some more in the studio with oil paints.

'Neblina de la Montana' (13cmx18cm) es una mezcla de pastel suave y oleo. Empece esta pintura un tardecer mirando desde el Canon Karr hacia White Sands en el sur de Nuevo Mexico. Fue hecho alli con pastel suave y luego la trabaje mas en el estudio con oleo.
