My blog has been quiet but I have been busy.  This is one of several scratchboard pieces which I finished recently.  The inspiration came from the thousands of photos I took last year of the hundreds of thousands of birds at the Bosque de Apache nature preserve in central New Mexico.

Mi blog ha sido muy quieto per he sido sumamente ocupada.  Este es una de varias piezas del dicho scratchboard que recien termine.  La inspiracion vino de los miles de fotos que saque el ano pasado de los miles y miles de pajaros en la reserva nacional Bosque de Apache en el centro de Nuevo Mejico.

Fortunately I'm staying on track with my '100 days/100 postcard paintings.  Here are days four and five.


Afortunadamente me quedo en buen camino con mis '100 dias/100 pinturas postales'.  Aqui tienes dias cuatro y cinco.

The first is an area heading south between Albuquerque and Las Cruces and the second an area of dunes to the east of El Paso TX.


La primera es un area yendo sur de Albuquerque a Las Cruces (Nuevo Mejico) y la segunda es un area de dunas al este de El Paso (Tejas).

I'm part of a group of artists doing a project of 100 postcard sized paintings in 100 days and, to keep myself honest and on task, I've decided to post them here.  I'm working in pastel because I love it and haven't done it in ages.  Here are the first three:

Soy parte de unos artistas haciendo un proyecto de 100 pinturas tamano postal en 100 dias y, para mantenerme disciplinada y punctual, he decidido ponerlas aqui.  Estoy trabajando en pastel porque me encanta y ha sido mucho tiempo que no lo hace.  Aqui tienes las primera tres:

It dawns on me that it's been months since I've written here.  I've been exploring a new art medium:  scratchboard.  It's another approach to drawing.  Instead of pencil or pen I make marks on a board covered with black ink.  It can be done on paper but I prefer the black boards made by Ampersand.  Where I scratch with the knife I get white lines.  More about this later.

This day lily was done for the recent New Mexico Art League silent auction fund raiser.  It is now in a private collection and I do hope the new owners enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Me di cuenta de que ha sido meses que no les escribo.  Ando explorando un nuevo medio de arte que me fascina:  el scratchboard.  Es otra manera de dibujar.  En vez de lapiz o pluma hago rasgos y rayas en una tabla cubierta de tinta negra.  Se puede hacerlo con papel pero prefiero las tablas preparadas por Ampersand.  Donde marco on una navaja salen lineas blancas.  Mas sobre esto luego.

Este fue hecho para una subasta de la Liga de Arte de Nuevo Mejico.  Ya reside en una coleccion privada y espero que los nuevos duenos esten tan contentos que yo en el hacerlo.

I've been working on some scratchboard art pieces.  This is the first of a miniature series of Southwestern historic pottery, a Zuni Pueblo jar from the 1880s.  The board is tiny, just 3"x4", and took a bit of time to complete.

He estado trabajando en algunas piezas de arte 'scratchboard'. Este es la primera de una serie en miniatura de la cerámica histórica del Sudoeste de los Estados Unidos, una jarra Zuni Pueblo de los anos 1880. La table es diminuta, sólo 3 "x4", y tomó un poco del tiempo para completarla.

New Mexico has a magic place called Bosque de Apache National Wildlife Refuge where each fall thousands upon thousands of birds (sandhill cranes, Arctic geese, myriad species of ducks) gather to winter. Feeding birds may erupt in explosions of wings at a moments notice and, at dusk, flight after flight of geese and cranes return to roost in the marshes. It's an awesome sight which should be experienced and was my inspriation.

This simple little black and white woodcut was done for the SSNW09 print exchange, a twice annually exchange celebrating the solstice.

En el estado de Nuevo Mexico (EEUUA) hay un sitio magico llamado El Refugio Nacional del Bosque de Apache a lo cual millares de pajaros migran cada otono (grullas sandhill, gansos articos, una variedad de patos) para pasar el invierno. De golpe habran explosiones de alas y, a la nochecer, vuelo tras vuelo de gansos y grullas vuelven para descansar en los pantanos. Es tan impresionante verlo y me inspiro.

Este grabado sencillo en blanco y negro fue hecho para el intercambio de grabados del SSNW09, lo cual occure dos veces al ano para celebrar el solsticio.

Details on saddles always fascinate me... Whether in the US Southwest or West or in Puerto Rico, each saddle owner leaves his mark. I enjoyed the challenge of painting leather, though this took multiple glazes to finally get what I wanted.

Los adornos en sillas vaqueras siempre me fascinan. No importa si los encuentran en el Sudoeste o Oeste de los Estados Unidos o en Puerto Rico, cada dueno deja su marca personal. Me gusto mucho la meta de pintar cuero en acuarela aunque esta lleva pasos multiples de pintura para lograrla.

'Roadrunner' ~ 'Correcaminos'

You might remember my roadrunner photo when I was in New Mexico last winter. Here he is, in all his glory, the New Mexico state bird. Most of you know him from his cartoon antics but this admirable bird mates for life and is a wonderful parent, both male and female tending to their young.

Quizas acuerden el foto del correcamino que tome cuando estuve en Nuevo Mejico el invierno pasado. Aqui esta, en todo su gloria, el pajaro estatal de Nuevo Mejico. La mayoria de vos le conocen por sus aventuras en los dibujos animados pero este pajaro admirable se une para toda la vida y los dos, macho y hembra, ambos cuidan a su cria.

This roadrunner lives in the space between my parents' home and the neighbors', a 10' X 30' patch of juniper and holly. We are all so accustomed to each other, he is a very cooperative model. I was so pleased to be able to take dozens of photos... he'll also become a woodcut but probably not this shot as most wouldn't recognize him without his tailfeathers!

Este correcaminos vive en el espacio entre la casa de mis padres y los vecinos, una area 3 por 9 metros de enebro y acebo. Estamos tan acostumbrados el uno al otro que resulta ser un model sumamente cooperativo. Felizmente tome docenas de fotos... el sera tambien un grabado en madera pero probablemente no este foto como la mayoria no lo reconocera sin sus plumas extremas.

After two months of travel, I'm back home in my studio. I expect these deer will find themselves the subject of a woodcut. We spied them along the dusty road in the Bosque de Apache National Wildlife Refuge, just 20 miles south of Socorro, New Mexico. It's a haven for migrating birds, northern visitors seeking warmer winter climes. The best time to visit is sunrise and sunset for the 'fly out' and 'fly in' of the birds. Of course, we were there around noon so saw few birds (cranes, geese) but we did catch these shy deer cautiously watching me approach with my camera.

Despues de dos meses de viaje, estoy de nuevo en mi estudio. Espero que estes ciervos sean models para un grabado de madera. Los habiamos espiado al lado del camino polvoriento en el Bosque de Apache National Wildlife Refuge (parque nacional) a solo 32 kilometros al sur de Socorro, Nuevo Mexico. Es un refugio para aves migrando para el invierno del norte lejano al clima mas templado. El mejor tiempo para visitar es el amanecer y el atardecer para el vuelo en masa de los parajos. Claro... estuvimos alla al mediodia entonces vimos pocos aves (garzas, gansos) pero si espiabamos estes ciervos timidos vigilandome acercandoles con mi camera.

Gustave Baumann has long been one of my favorite printmakers. While in Santa Fe early this month I took advantage of a modest exhibition of his work at the New Mexico Museum of Art. It was thrilling to see his plates, prints, and marionettes. Though I was disappointed that it was a small showing (only one room), it is well worth the visit the next time you are in Santa Fe. It will run through September 2010.

I had planned to spend time walking our famous Canyon Road later that day, enjoying all the galleries, but the wind was bitter, too cold for one unaccustomed to northern winter weather. Perhaps the next time...

Gustave Baumann ha sido uno de mis artistas predilectos por much tiempo. Mientras estuve en Santa Fe este mes tenia la oportunidad de ver una exhibicion pequena de sus obras en el Museo de Arte de Nuevo Mejico. Fue tremendo ver las placas, grabados, y marionetas. Aunque senti frustracion por el tamano de la exhibicion (solo una sala) vale la pena verla la proxima vez que visiten a Santa Fe. Durara hasta el septiembre de 2010.

Tenia buenas intenciones de caminar por el famoso Canyon Road gozandome de todas las galerias pero el viento era feroz, demasiado frio para gente como yo no acostumbrada a la temporada de invierno del norte. Quizas la proxima vez...

I revisited my models, the Canadian geese that live through the winter at the Rio Grande Nature Center. Driving around in the North Valley of Albuquerque and the adjoining village of Corrales, you can see huge flocks of these birds settled in fields full of the remains of hay and alfalfa. They will be here until spring when they head north again to Canada... very handsome birds which I will need to use for another woodcut.

Visite mis modelos, los Gansos Canadienses, que viven durante el invierno alrededor del Centro de Naturaleza del Rio Grande. Andando por el Valle del Norte de Albuquerque y el pueblito contiguo de Corrales se ve bandadas enormes de estos pajaros poblando el campo lleno de los restos de heno y alfalfa. Quedaran aqui hasta la primavera cuando regresaran al norte a Canada... unos pajaros hermosos los cuales tendre que usar una vez mas como modelos para otro grabado en madera.

I spent December and the first part of January in my home state of New Mexico. Though I had planned to do some art, somehow family pleasantly got in the way. Living so far away, these visits are a welcome renewal of my connections.

Here is the church on the plaza in Albuquerque's Old Town, San Felipe de Neri Church. Founded in 1793, it is the oldest surviving building in the city.

Pase todo diciembre y el primer parte de enero en mi estado de Nuevo Mexico. Aunque pense en hacer algo de arte, de una manera o otra asuntos placenteros de familia me destraian. Viviendo tan alejada, esas visitas renuevan mis conecciones.

Aqui les tiene la iglesia en la plaza del parte historico de Albuquerque, la Iglesia de San Felipe de Neri. Fundada en 1793, es el edificio mas viejo en el ciudad que nos queda.

These are my favorite photographs taken when we visited Abo (accent on the o), a part of the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument in New Mexico. The Abo Pass Trail also has a colorful history but is now a quiet stretch of a two-lane state highway.

Estas son mis fotografias favoritas tomado cuando visitabamos Abo (acento en el ‘o’), parte de el Monumento Nacional de los Pueblos Indios Salinas.
El Paso Abo tambien tiene una historia pintoresca pero hoy en dia es un estrecho quieto del camino estatal de solo dos vias.

Although back in my Puerto Rican studio, my thoughts fly back to my recent vacation. Shall these photos become prints? Or just wonderful memories of sun and dry heat and refreshing breezes?

Aun que estoy de Nuevo en mi studio en Puerto Rico, encuentro que estoy reviviendo algunos de los dias de mi vacacion recien. Estes fotos seran temas para grabados? O solo recuerdos maravillosos del sol y un calor seco y brisas refrescantes?

The Rio Grande Nature Center has wonderful paths that take you under the old cottonwoods to the river. In June most of the native flowers have already bloomed but there are still elegant remnants.

El Centro de Naturaleza del Rio Grande tiene senderos agradables que nos dirijen debajo de los viejos algodones al rio. En Junio la mayoria de los flores nativos estan ya florecidos pero quedan algunos restos elegantes.

The famous Rio Grande River around Albuquerque has more water than I remember in a long time. It is a joy to see in a place where water is so valued. Although it is running fast there are quiet spots, like near the Nature Center.

El famoso Rio Grande alrededor de Albuquerque tiene mas agua que yo puedo recordar en mucho tiempo. Es un placer verlo en un sitio en donde el agua es tan apreciado. Aunque corriendo un poco rapido hay lugares tranquilos como cerca del Centro de Naturaleza.

Visiting family in Albuquerque always means early morning walks in the neighborhood. Because New Mexico has had so much snow and rain this year, the day lilies and hollyhocks abound. When I can't draw or make prints, I love to take photos, especially 'flower portraits'.

Visitando la familia en Albuquerque siempre incluye unos paseos por la madrugada en la vecindad. A causa de que Nuevo Mejico ha tenido tanto nieve y lluvia este ano, los flores abundan. Cuando no puedo pintar o grabar, me encanta tomar fotos, especialmente los 'retratos florales'.
