Details on saddles always fascinate me... Whether in the US Southwest or West or in Puerto Rico, each saddle owner leaves his mark. I enjoyed the challenge of painting leather, though this took multiple glazes to finally get what I wanted.

Los adornos en sillas vaqueras siempre me fascinan. No importa si los encuentran en el Sudoeste o Oeste de los Estados Unidos o en Puerto Rico, cada dueno deja su marca personal. Me gusto mucho la meta de pintar cuero en acuarela aunque esta lleva pasos multiples de pintura para lograrla.

I read all Belinda Del Pesco's blog entries. She is a fine printmaker and very active artist who inspires a lot of us, especially with her watercolor enhanced ghost prints.

This is my recent 'From My Window', which I printed without ink on a piece of watercolor paper... a ghost print. Then I had fun going back in with watercolor. Because there were some stray ink marks on the white areas, I used an exacto knife to cut out the colored area and mounted that on a piece of Arches 88.

Siempre leo el blog de Belinda Del Pesco. Ella es una excelente artista, muy activa con pinturas y grabados quien inspira a muchos de nosotros, especialmente con sus grabados 'ghost' en que se usa acuarela.

Este es mi grabado recien 'Desde mi ventana', que hice sin tinta en un pedazo de papel acuarela... un grabado 'ghost' o 'fantasma' porque no se ve muy bien. Entonces me diverti aplicando acuarela. A causa de que habian unas manchas de tinta en las areas de blanco, use una navaja tipo 'exacto' para cortar la area de color y la monte en un papel Arches 88.

Let me show you how I make small repairs on my woodcuts. My tools are wood putty and cut up playing cards, the plasticized kind casinos give away free. (Since I'm not playing poker with these, the hole punched in the middle doesn't matter.

Quiero mostrarles como hago pequenas reparaciones en la madera de un grabado. Mis implementos son mascilla para madera y pedacitos de naipes, the tipo plastico que se usan en los casinos que se regalan gratis. (Como no las uso para jugar al poker, el agujero en el centro no me importa.)

First I work the putty with my fingers, according to the directions. I always wear disposable plastic gloves when I do this. I then spread the putty into the area needing repair, pressing firmly as I do so. Before the putty has a chance to set up, I take the small piece of card and smooth the area, working it over and over until it is the same level as the uncut wood surrounding it. The edge of the card is also useful to level the putty application. I toss the cards frequently as they get tacky with putty. With a little patience, this makes sanding later unnecessary, as you can see below...

Primero mezclo la mascilla con los dedos, segun las instrucciones. Siempre lo hago usando guantes plasticos disponibles. En el area que requiere el reparo, firmamente aplico la mascilla. Antes de que se pone duro, tomo una naipe y trabajandola poco a poco la mascilla llega a la misma nivel de la madera no cortado alrededor. El borde de la naipe tambien es util para nivelar la mascilla. Las boto con frequencia porque la naipe se llena con el exceso de mascilla. Con un poco de paciencia, este proceso elimina la necesidad de lijar la mascilla seca mas luego, como se ve abajo.

I'm proofing my latest woodcut for the Baren #41 exchange. I've just removed the paper pattern and notice I've missed cutting a couple of areas. I also need a little wood putty on the right side of the window behind the plant. It's not straight and, though you might not see it, it will bother me greatly in the finished print if I don't take care of it now.

Estoy haciendo una prueba del ultimo grabado de madera para el intercambio 41 de Baren. Acabe de quitar el patron de papel and veo que me falta cortar unas lineas. Tambien tengo que reparar el bloque con un poco de masilla en el lado derecha de la ventana. No esta recto y, aunque quizas no lo veas, lo va a fastidiarme mucho en el grabado final si no lo corrijo ahora.

Another little transparent watercolor, getting myself prepped for something larger... The yellow heliconias are found throughout Puerto Rico's El Yunque rainforest, a bright golden glimmer among all the verdant green.

Otra pintura pequena en acuarela transparente, preparandome para algo mas grande... Se encuentran las heliconias amarillas por el bosque portorriqueno de El Yunque, un vistazo dorado entre tanto verdor.

It's 6:30 in the morning and the sky should be blue but the Saharan dust is upon us. It came in late Thursday and has given the entire island a hazy look. Visitors think it is charming... but we in Puerto Rico are warned that those with breathing problems should stay inside in air conditioned splendor. Unfortunately almost everyone I know doesn't have air conditioning so our ceiling fans spread it through the house.

Son las 6:30 de la madrugada yel cielo deberia ser azul pero el polvo de la Saharan esta con nosotros. Llego por la noche el jueves pasado y ha dado un aspecto brumoso a toda la isla. Nuestros turistas lo piensa un encanto... pero nosotros en Puerto Rico estamos en alerta para los que padecen de problemas de respiracion, que se deben quedarse adentro con aire acondicionado. Por desgracia casi todos de mi amistades no tienen aire acondicionado entonces nuestros abanicos de techo lo disemina por toda la casa.

I've using my watercolors this week with two goals in mind. First, it's been several years since I've done any watercolor (embarrassing since I'm a juried member of the Puerto Rican Watercolor Society) and, second, I wanted to work with dramatic light which I want to incorporate into my monochromatic woodcuts.

This is part of Old San Juan's historic San Jose Church, built in 1606, and one of two Gothic churches on the island. I love the play of light at high noon on old Puerto Rican buildings.

He estado pintando con acuarela esta semana con dos propositos. Primero, ha sido varios anos que no lo hago (aunque soy miembra de la Asociacion Acuarelista de Puerto Rico) y segundo queria trabajar con luz dramatica para incorporarla en los disenos monocromaticos de mis grabados en madera.


Este es parte de la Iglesia de San Jose del Viejo San Juan, construido en 1606, y uno de solo dos iglesias goticas en la isla. Me encanta la luz de mediodia vista en las paredes de los edificios antiguos de Puerto Rico.

The Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Washington, is a must see for everyone. While traveling, we just stumbled on this wonderful place. While the exhibition space is modest, the Hot Shop is an experience not to be missed. With good seating and overhead cameras, we were able to see Australian artist Ben Edols work his magic, with the help of the regular museum glass artists. I know you can't all visit but they have a web cam worth watching. If it's not showing when you click this, check the hours for your time zone because its really a treat.

El Museo de Vidrio en Tacoma, Washington, es algo para todos. Estamos de viaje and 'sin querer queriendo' encontrabamos con este sitio maravilloso. Aunque el area de exhibicion es pequeno, el Hot Shop es una gran experiencia. Con asientos buenisimos y cameras por encima, podiamos ver al artista Australiano Ben Edols hacer su magica, con la ayuda de los artistas regulares del museo. Se que todos voz no podran visitar pero tienen un 'web cam'. Si no esta funcionando cuando lo cliquea... pues chequea las horas para su area del mundo porque si vale la pena...

The 'Different Strokes from Different Folks' blog is the wonderful brainchild of artist Karin Jurick. It's a bi-weekly challenge to us artists to all create from the same photograph. Never being quick on the draw, no pun intended, I've had the Week 1 Challenge 'My Jack' floating around the studio and .... finally ... he's done. There have been more than 20 challenges to date. These are supposed to be done within a two week time frame. Somehow that doesn't work for me but the inspiration does ... eventually. If you need some of that inspiration, I suggest visiting that site. There might just be something that sets you to carving...

El blog 'Different Strokes from Different Folks' es la creacion maravillosa de la artista Karin Jurick. Es una reta cada dos semanas a nosotros los artistas a crear de la misa fotografia. Como nunca hago nada rapidamente, el imagen de la primera semana ha sido circulando mi estudio y ... finalmente ... esta hecha. Han sido mas de 20 retas hasta al dia. Se deben terminarlas dentro de un periodo de dos semanas. De alguna manera este no es sirve para mi pero la inspiracion si sirve ... eventualmente. Si hace falta un poco de esta inspiracion, sugiero una visita a ese blog. Puede ser que haya algo que te antoje cortar una madera...

My 'Griffin' is not new to you but my news is... He received an Honorable Mention in Printmaking at the recent East End Art Guild's 10th Annual Juried Exhibition. Again, I was the only printmaker so it is an honor to be included after some tough jurying by Puerto Rican artists Francisco Rodon, Carlos Davila Rinaldi, and Nelson Sambolin. Hurrah once again for printmakers! If you get a chance, the show is at the Centro de Arte Angel 'Lito' Pena (Humacao) until 27 February. It's a great show!

Mi grabado en madera 'Griffin' ('Grifo') no es nuevo pero mis noticias si son... El recibio una Mencion Honorosa para Grabado en el recien Decima Exposicion Anual por Jurado del Gremio Artistico del Este. Otra vez, fui la unica artista de grabados por eso es un honor estar incluida despues de un jurado tan fuerte por los artistas puertorriquenos Francisco Rodon, Carlos Davila Rinaldi, y Nelson Sambolin. Una vez mas... que vivan los que hacen grabados. Si tienen la oportunidad, la exposicion estara en el Centro de Arte Angel 'Lito' Pena (Humacao) hasta el 27 de febrero. Es una exhibicion buenisima!

This roadrunner lives in the space between my parents' home and the neighbors', a 10' X 30' patch of juniper and holly. We are all so accustomed to each other, he is a very cooperative model. I was so pleased to be able to take dozens of photos... he'll also become a woodcut but probably not this shot as most wouldn't recognize him without his tailfeathers!

Este correcaminos vive en el espacio entre la casa de mis padres y los vecinos, una area 3 por 9 metros de enebro y acebo. Estamos tan acostumbrados el uno al otro que resulta ser un model sumamente cooperativo. Felizmente tome docenas de fotos... el sera tambien un grabado en madera pero probablemente no este foto como la mayoria no lo reconocera sin sus plumas extremas.

After two months of travel, I'm back home in my studio. I expect these deer will find themselves the subject of a woodcut. We spied them along the dusty road in the Bosque de Apache National Wildlife Refuge, just 20 miles south of Socorro, New Mexico. It's a haven for migrating birds, northern visitors seeking warmer winter climes. The best time to visit is sunrise and sunset for the 'fly out' and 'fly in' of the birds. Of course, we were there around noon so saw few birds (cranes, geese) but we did catch these shy deer cautiously watching me approach with my camera.

Despues de dos meses de viaje, estoy de nuevo en mi estudio. Espero que estes ciervos sean models para un grabado de madera. Los habiamos espiado al lado del camino polvoriento en el Bosque de Apache National Wildlife Refuge (parque nacional) a solo 32 kilometros al sur de Socorro, Nuevo Mexico. Es un refugio para aves migrando para el invierno del norte lejano al clima mas templado. El mejor tiempo para visitar es el amanecer y el atardecer para el vuelo en masa de los parajos. Claro... estuvimos alla al mediodia entonces vimos pocos aves (garzas, gansos) pero si espiabamos estes ciervos timidos vigilandome acercandoles con mi camera.

Recently I returned to oil painting. I'm having a one-woman show in February and will be combining my smaller woodcuts with small paintings. It will be fun curating my prints to fit with the 'ocean' paintings.

My husband liked this so much that it will be our yearly Christmas card, saving me the trouble of doing a woodcut... (which would probably have been ready to mail out after Three Kings Day-January 6).

Recientemente empeze de nuevo pintando en oleo. En febrero tendre una exhibicion sola y planeo combinar mis grabados en madera con pinturas pequenas. Seria interesante combinar los grabados con pinturas del mar.

A mi marido le gusto tanto que sera nuestro tarjeta de Navidad este ano, asi ahorandome el tiempo de no hacer un grabado... que seria bueno porque probablemente serian listas para el correo despues del Dia del los Reyes Magos.

Happy news!!! Three of my recent prints were accepted into the 10th Annual East End Art Guild Juried Exhibition here in Puerto Rico. I was the only printmaker so the competition among watercolors, oils and acrylics was fierce. We had three jurors, all well-known Puerto Rican artists: Francisco Rodon, Carlos Davila and Nelson Sambolin. I don't have the numbers but there were less than 60 pieces accepted... so hurrah for printmakers! We can compete with the big guys.

This little piece that made it in was created for a recent Baren exchange so many of you readers actually own it. The other two pieces were my 'Antorcha', another Baren exchange piece, and 'The Griffin', a Solstice exchange piece, both of which many of you may have.

Felices noticias!!! De mis grabados en madera recientes hay tres que fueron aceptados al Decima Exhibicion Anual Jurado del East End Art Guild. Era la unica que presento grabados en este competicion dura entre acuarelas, oleos, y acrilicos. Tuvimos 3 jueces, todos artistas Puertorriquenos bien reconocidos: Francisco Rodon, Carlos Davila, y Nelson Sambolin. No tengo en mano los datos exactos pero habian menos de 60 obras aceptadas... entonces un gran OLE para artistas de grabados. Si podemos competir entre los grandes del arte.

Este es una de ellas y como fue hecha para un intercambio recien de Baren hay muchos de vosotros que lo tienen en casa. Las otras dos fueron 'Antorcha', otra de un intercambio de Baren, y 'El Grifo', de un intercambio del Solsticio.
