Tropical flowers have been occupying me this last week, working on a photography commision. The clients have a beautiful 3 acre yard, unlike my unkempt, wild 3 acres. Here are some ... which may turn up as linocuts or paintings later!

Flores tropicales me han ocupado esta semana pasada, trabajando en una comision fotografica. Los clientes tienen un jardin bellisima de 3 cuerdas, el opuesto de mis 3 cuerdas media salvajes. Aqui hay algunas ... que seguramente saldran como grabados linocuts o pinturas en el futuro!

'Taino Birds' ('Pajaros tainos') is another linocut design inspired from the petroglyphs around Puerto Rico. This is also an edition of 100, oil based ink pulled on mulberry paper.

'Pajaros tainos' es otro diseno linocut inspirado por los petroglifos alrededor de Puerto Rico. Este tambien es una edicion de 100, con tinta (oleo) negra en papel mulberry.

The latest linocut using Taino Indian designs: 'Taino Mosaic', edition of 100, printed black on Japanese mulberry paper, size 4"x6".

El ultimo linocut derivado de los disenos tainos: 'Mosaico taino', edicion de 100, grabado con tinta negra en linoleo, papel japones mulberry, tamano 4"x6".

El Yunque Caribbean National Forest... not far from my home, is the only Tropical Rain Forest in the U.S. Forest Service system. There is a wonderful visitors center, El Portal, which will be celebrating 10 years of service the first week of June. There will be a group of artists showing and working during that time; I will be one of them. If you are in Puerto Rico at that time, please come by and say hello. El Parque Nacional El Yunque... no muy lejos de mi casa, es el unico bosque lluvial en el sistema nacional de bosques de los Estados Unidos. Tiene un centro de visitante fabuloso, El Portal, que celebra 10 anos de servicio la primera semana de Junio. Hara un grupo de artistas exhibiendo y demonstrando durante el dia; sere uno de ellos. Taino Indian petrogylphs, symbols carved in stones, abound in Puerto Rico. This newest linocut is called 'Mundo Taino' ('Taino World') and incorporates a number of images from the island... two frogs, a bat, an Indian mask, and a monkey figure. This print is an edition of 100 on masa paper; the image is 6"x4".

Los petroglifos (piedra grabada antigua) del indio taino estan por todos lados en Puerto Rico. Este nuevo grabado linocut se llama 'Mundo Taino' y en ello figura varios simbolos de la isla... 2 ranas o sapos, un murcielago, una mascara taina, y una figura de mono. Este grabado tiene una edicion de 100 en papel masa; el imagen mide 6"x4".

Tricks in the name of paper conservation...
There are times when a linocut just doesn't take all the ink, leaving little white patches. In order to salvage a print, I use a color shaper to move the ink into those little areas that didn't take. This print was missing ink on the upper right edge. (You can also cut the eraser end of a pencil into a point and use that.) While it may be unorthodox, throwing out the print would make me feel worse because of the paper waste. ['Not-a-harlequin', linocut, 3.25"x3.25"]

Trucos en nombre de la conservacion de papel... Hay ocasiones en que un linocut no quiere tomar toda la tinta, dejando areas pequenitas en blanco. Para salvar un grabado, uso un dicho 'color shaper' para mover la tinta a las areas pequenas donde no hay tinta. En ese grabado faltaba tinta en la esquina arriba al derecho. (Tambien se puede cortar a un punto la goma de un lapiz y usar esa.) A pesar de que es un metodo un poco suspecto, la opcion de botarlo me haria sentir peor por el gasto de papel. Transferring a drawing... I believe in the KISS method. It happens to be the first method I learned and it still works best for me after all these years. Supplies needed: pencil with soft lead, tape, and a ball-point pen. Making sure that I am working with a reverse image, I rub pencil to the backside of the design, tape it onto the lino plate and use a ballpoint pen to trace over the lines. Definitely KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid).

Tranferiendo un dibujo... Creo en la manera mas sencilla. Es el primer metodo que aprendi and todavia funciona lo mejor para mi despues de todo este tiempo. Equipo requisito: lapiz con grafito suave, cinta adhesiva, y un boligrafo. Asegurandome que estoy trabajando con un imagen al reverso, aplico grafita al lado reverso del dibujo, lo ato al linoleo and uso un boligrafo a recorrer las lineas. Definitivamente simple.

This print was done on the vinyl plate mentioned in the last post. One nice thing about the vinyl plates, when using a press, is they don't compress over time the way the linocut plates do.

'Aguila Maya' ('Mayan Eagle'), edition of 40, printed on Fabriano Uno watercolor paper with Artools sepia oil-based ink, for a [Baren] print exchange a few months back.

Este fue hecho en la placa de vinilo que mencione anteriormente. Un aspecto bueno de esas de vinilo es que no comprimen como las de linoleo despues de muchos pasos bajo presion.

I find I still prefer linoleum so am using up the last of these vinyl relief plates I bought last year. They come blue on one side and green on the other. The pros: it doesn't warp when wet like linoleum and the color makes it easier to see the drawing when cutting. The cons: it takes some practice getting clean cuts since the top 'plastic' layer doesn't snap off like lino does. Inking and printing are just like linoleum, no different.

Encuentro que todavia prefiero linoleo por eso estoy usando la ultima de esas placas de vinilo. Vienen azul en un lado y verde en el otro. Lo bueno: no se tuerce como el linoleo cuando esta mojada y el color lo hace mas facil ver el dibujo cuando esta cortandolo ... Lo malo: hace falta practica tratando de sacar cortes limpios a causa de que el 'plastico' no rompe como lino. Aplicando la tinta y grabando es lo mismo que con el linoleo.

I recycled an older linocut piece into a smaller one which has become 'Fishes'. I decided to print an edition of 21 on that nice mingeishi awagami (natural) that I got just a while ago. Again I used the new ball-bearing baren, what a treat!

Recicle un linocut viejo a un tamano mas pequeno llamado 'Fishes' ('Peces'). Decidi limitarlo a una edicion de 21, grabado en ese papel mingeishi awagami (natural) que recibi hace un ratito. Otra vez use el baren nuevo, que delicia!

I've been back a few days and finally posting the promised photos from our USVI/BVI trip. Just a taste of what inspires me... Our 'house' for the week! Three bedrooms and two baths (sort of)...

Off to the British Virgin Islands in a few minutes. I will post pictures when we get back... motoring in a trawler with good friends, my husband is captain. It will be a low-key trip and I have my sketchbook for ideas that emerge while away from the distractions of the studio!

'Moorish Wall', linocut printed on banana paper seen here (or gold flecked white mulberry), Artools sepia oil-based ink, size 4"x6", open edition... for the Southern Summer Northern Winter Solstice Exchange 2005.

I printed this with a spoon because the texture of the paper was too rough for a baren. Also I liked the uneven inking which didn't show up with the greater pressure when using the press.

I used two different papers because I didn't have enough of either one. I loved the results from both and will use these papers again!

Feeling uninspired for the Southern Summer Northern Winter Solstice Exchange 2005, I browsed through old photos and came up with this one: a concrete decorated wall in Segovia, Spain.


Con una falta de inspiracion para el intercambio 2005 'Southern Summer Northern Winter Solstice', pense en unos fotos viejos tomados en un viaje a Espana: una pared decorativa de Segovia.

I only pulled part of this edition of 'The Reef' when I created it in 2004. With the ball-bearing baren I was able to control the intensity of the darks better than with my press. I had problems mainly because of the odd size (13" in diameter). The edition is complete! Finally!


Solo hice un parte de este edicion de 'The Reef' ('El Recife') cuando lo hice en 2004. Con el nuevo baren podia controlar la intensidad de la tinta mejor que podia con el press. Tuve problemas mas que nada por el tamano irregular (13 pulgadas de ancho). La edicion ya esta completa! Al fin!

The paper just arrived, delivered by my friendly postman. I open it, beautiful and pristine. The top is masa, the middle mulberry and the bottom mingeishi awagami (natural)... I've used masa and mulberry before but never the last one. Tonight I tear and cut paper and print tomorrow!


Acaba de llegar el papel, entregado por el cartero. Lo abro, bella y limpia. Lo de encima es papel masa, en el medio mulberry and lo de abajo es mingeishi awagami natural... Tengo experiencia con masa y mulberry pero no con el ultimo. Esta noche rompo y corto papel y sueno con grabar manana... (desculpe que no hay acentos ni el 'enye', pero mi keyboard es sumamente yanqui)...

Bananas and plantains come in all varieties here in Puerto Rico. This stalk was growing wild in the next lot, so we have given it a home in our kitchen. This red variety tastes very fruity, a little like apples, and is very good eating and also makes excellent 'amarillas', ripe pan-fried banana slices.


Bananas y platanos vienen en toda variedad aqui en Puerto Rico. Estes estaban creciendo en el lote abandonado al lado de nuestro propiedad entonces ya estamos usandolos. Este variedad rojo tiene sabor a manzana and tambien se los puede usar para 'amarillas' excelentes.

Old linocuts cry out for finishing... Because humidity affects paper here in Puerto Rico, I don't always pull a full edition of prints. While clearing out the studio I found a pile of linocuts that still have incomplete editions. I just made a paper order... so these will have to wait a few days until it arrives.

Un monton de linocuts para terminar... A causa de la humedad que afecta el papel aqui in Puerto Rico, no hago una edicion completa de golpe. Limpiando el estudio encontre unos linocuts que faltan una edicion completa. Acabo de hacer un pedido de papel por telefono... entonces estos tendran que esperar unos dias hasta que llegue.
