Book Review of "101 Prints" by Norman R. Eppink

101 Prints101 Prints by Norman R. Eppink
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book has an interesting format. Originally the book was a project in which Eppink produced 101 prints using the various printmaking processes known and then gave a brief description to accompany each of those prints. It was presented as a boxed set, an edition of only 15. While those 15 sets are no longer available outside of museums and private collections, we have a published book which reproduces those prints with their explanations.

The upside for this book is that there is a simple explanation of each of the printmaking processes: various types of woodcuts, intaglio, etc. It was a bit more expansive on the different types than most printmaking books I've seen, making it a good reference book for any printmaker that wishes to expand their library.

The downside is it was published in 1971 and since that time there have been big developments in many newer printmaking techniques. In addition, a number of his print descriptions now have a newer vocabulary. Also don't expect a how-to book on the processes.

Another new piece ~ Otra pieza nueva

"Beach Bum"  ~  "Pordiosero playero"
Scratchboard  5"x7" (12cm x 17cm)
Here's another recently finished scratchboard piece.  Here in Puerto Rico we have the pearly-eyed thrasher which loves to hop right up as soon as you open your food at the beach.  Since posting this elsewhere I've gotten all kinds of similar comments about pesky grackles, house sparrows, and pigeons, all shameless urban beggars.

Aqui tenemos otra pieza scratchboard recientamente terminada.

Something new ~ Algo Nuevo

"Bosque Reflections" ~ "Reflejos del Bosque"
Scratchboard  5"x7" (12cm x 17cm)

My blog has been quiet but I have been busy.  This is one of several scratchboard pieces which I finished recently.  The inspiration came from the thousands of photos I took last year of the hundreds of thousands of birds at the Bosque de Apache nature preserve in central New Mexico.

Emily Carr?

 'North by Northwest' - woodcut, 3.25"x2.5" - edition 100
'Norte por noroeste' - grabado en madera, 8.5x6cm - edicion 100

I swear Emily Carr haunted my knives for my latest woodcut.  Don't know who she is?  Then you are definitely not Canadian.  Neither am I but I just recently found her.  I love her trees and somehow I felt her spirit creep into this tiny piece for the Baren 53 print exchange.

Miniature ~ Miniatura

'Harvest Storm' ~~ 'Tormenta de la siega'
Scratchboard ~ 3"x5" (7.5 cm x 12.5 cm)

Another scratchboard piece...  These teensy ones actually take more time than those three times their size.

'Vejigante Boricua'
Scratchboard / 6"x6" ~ 15cm x 15cm

I just finished this.  It is now sprayed with varnish and the question is do I frame it or use one of those cute black plate stands.  I'm leaning toward the latter since it's so small.

The vejigante is super-Puerto Rican.  The clown-like character is a favorite in the festivals, dancing among the crowd, making everyone clap and move to the music.
