Gustave Baumann has long been one of my favorite printmakers. While in Santa Fe early this month I took advantage of a modest exhibition of his work at the New Mexico Museum of Art. It was thrilling to see his plates, prints, and marionettes. Though I was disappointed that it was a small showing (only one room), it is well worth the visit the next time you are in Santa Fe. It will run through September 2010.

I had planned to spend time walking our famous Canyon Road later that day, enjoying all the galleries, but the wind was bitter, too cold for one unaccustomed to northern winter weather. Perhaps the next time...

Hi Diane -- I just had the pleasure of looking through a very interesting book on Baumann:
Title: Hand of a craftsman :
the woodcut technique of Gustave Baumann / by Acton, David (1996).

Have you seen it? Very interesting discussion and illustrations of his process. The ability to envision and plan for such creative layering is just dazzling. Experience is the teacher I guess.

It sounds like you had a wonderful day Diane and I can see the ice in the photo even though it's bright and sunny. Wonderful photos!

Jan... Yes, I have a copy of that book. The process is wonderful. At the museum they had a print with about 6 woodblocks next to it. The original print actually had more blocks but it was so informative to see. That sort of educational approach is a great way of letting people understand the complicated nature of printmaking.

Lynnie... Yes, it was a great day. Unfortunately the wind blew so bitter that I didn't get over to Canyon Road as planned. However, I did stop into a wonderful gallery, Works-on-Paper. Quite a treat.

Love your artwork. I'm new to blogging and just created my own printmaking/painting blog myself. I'm a huge fan of Gustave Baumann too. The man was a true craftsman and artist. Keep up the good work.
