I continue my love affair with Alaska. Our recent trip resulted in thousand of photos which I keep sorting through, making decisions what to do next. Thank goodness for digital cameras and laptops. I couldn't afford to take 100 photos of a bear doing next to nothing.
This is my Baren Exchange #42 contribution. The only requirement was the paper size: 3"x9" or 7.5 x 23 cm' woodcut so I decided to do another 'architectural' piece. The historic Russian Orthodox Church (Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel) is actually a rebuilt version of the original that burnt down in 1966. It's rather crowded in by all the other buildings but it still shows beautifully. I rather like how the print came out.

I like it to, very well done
Beautiful, Diane. Stark and graphic and strong in that way that only a woodcut can be.
Gorgeous, I assume there is a bear doing nothing down below out the picture....
Thank you, Georgina... for your very positive comments...
Annie... I agree there are some images that work beautifully in black and white. I wish I were more adventuresome like you and delve into colored woodcuts but seem to reserve that for my paintings instead.
LOL... d.moll You made me laugh. No, the bear wasn't in Sitka nor anywhere near the church. However, he's in my studio and will show up as a print very soon... LOL
How amazing to see the Sitka Russian Orthodox Church steeple on your blog--a truly fine woodcut, and one of the better impressions I've seen of that church. You are very inspiring!
Ah, Michelle... I am especially flattered that you like it. I saw your lovely art in a Juneau gallery. I wish I'd contacted you before the trip. You live in a very inspiring place and it would have been lovely to meet you.
Yes, this is beautiful, Diane! I have a big weakness for this type of architecture; your print really resonates with me.
The one from your last post is excellent too.
The bear is ringing the bell - the one time he is doing something, the view is obscured!
Lovely print Diane and I like your new picture as well. Cheers!
I love this print. I bet you have some amazing photos to inspire you.
