Another Caribbean anchorage scene... I'm enjoying the pastel mini pieces immensely. After working so long in printmaking, which has many steps, the change to pastel is refreshing both because it's quick and it's colorful.

For the Year of the Rabbit I was heavily inspired by printmaker Diana Moll’s blog with her menagerie of adorable rabbits. How can one do better thanthat… so this became a cuddly rabbit waiting to see if you would try to pick him up. I actually wanted to title it ‘Year of the Moll-haired Rabbit’ but realized I don’t know what a mohair looks like and I didn’t want insult Diana’s furry friends.

This is the first time in ages that I kept the edition size down to exactly the number in the exchange. I like the idea of them being special and limited to only my Baren friends. Also I love the idea that this block is now cancelled ... very liberating.

Para el Ano del Conejo me inspiro muchisimo el blog de Diana Moll con su coleccion de conejitos lindos. Como puede uno mejorar a este... entonces este es un conejo adorable, esperando a ver si lo recojas para acariciarlo. En realidad quise titularlo 'Year of the Moll-haired Rabbit' ... un juego de la palabra inglesa 'mohair' que no sale en castellano en ningun sentido ... y tambien como no tengo ningun idea como parece un conejo angora no quise insultar a esos amiguitos de Diana.

Este es la primera vez en mucho tiempo en que hize una edicion exacta para el intercambio. Me gusta el idea de que son unicos limitados a solo mis amigos de Baren. Tambien me encanto el idea de que este bloque ya esta cancelado... me siento libre.

Siempre quise hacer un linocut para San Valentin pero hay tantos imagenes fabulosos y tradicionales por todos partes entonces tenia que hacer algo mas complicado, complicado como el corazon humano es complicado. Este impresion es otro de la serie (10 en total) basada en disenos abstratos tipo Zentangle que hize el ano pasado, al fin dandos sus frutos. Este es parte de un intercambio semi-anual del Solsticio entre grabadores internacionales.

This is mine. In planning this print I wanted it to be symbolic of hope for Japan rather than dwell on the tragedy of the recent earthquake and tsunami. The black fan symbolizes the honor of the Japanese people, the cranes stand for hope and tranquility, and the cherry blossoms for the eternal beauty of nature.

Los gradados resultantes estan de venta aqui. Este es el mio. En planear este grabado en linoleo quise un simbolo de la esperanza para Japon en vez de pensar en lo tragico del terremoto y tsunami de este ano. El abanico negro simboliza el honor del pueblo japones; las grullas, la esperanza y tranquiliada; y los flores del cerezo, la belleza eterna de la naturaleza.

' Guiro Tropical'

I've finished printing my contribution to the Baren Forum Exchange #49. They go in the mail today. I've been working with Zentangle images and this is the second of a series of ten. The guiro is a typical tropical musical instrument, made out of a gourd and incised with ridges. To make a rhythmic sound, the musician uses a stick and rubs along the side, making a loud rasping.

Acabo de terminar mi contribucion al intercambio 49 del foro de Baren. Los metere in el correo hoy. He estado trabajando con imagenes tipo Zentangle y este es el segundo de un serie de diez. El guiro es un instrumento musical tipico en el Caribe. Se lo hace de una calabaza,inscribiendo en los lados. Para hacer el ritmo musical, tomen un palito duro raspando el guiro firmamente.

It dawns on me that it's been months since I've written here. I've been exploring a new art medium: scratchboard. It's another approach to drawing. Instead of pencil or pen I make marks on a board covered with black ink. It can be done on paper but I prefer the black boards made by Ampersand. Where I scratch with the knife I get white lines. More about this later.

This day lily was done for the recent New Mexico Art League silent auction fund raiser. It is now in a private collection and I do hope the new owners enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Me di cuenta de que ha sido meses que no les escribo. Ando explorando un nuevo medio de arte que me fascina: el scratchboard. Es otra manera de dibujar. En vez de lapiz o pluma hago rasgos y rayas en una tabla cubierta de tinta negra. Se puede hacerlo con papel pero prefiero las tablas preparadas por Ampersand. Donde marco on una navaja salen lineas blancas. Mas sobre esto luego.

Este fue hecho para una subasta de la Liga de Arte de Nuevo Mejico. Ya reside en una coleccion privada y espero que los nuevos duenos esten tan contentos que yo en el hacerlo.

I'm taking a page out of Henry Ford's assembly line idea and working on a series of ten linocuts, all abstracts based on Zentangle sketches I did last fall. One is already done and the rest are in different stages of completion. The only way I would be able to finish all ten is to do all of them at once.

I bought some mounted lino from McClain's, the kind that has black ink on the surface. Then I glued my patterns on the various blocks, let them dry, and began cutting. The first was the one for the Baren print exchange 'Loco Motion' .

Estoy tomando una pagina de Henry Ford y su famoso 'assembly line' y estoy trabajando una serie de diez grabados en linoleo, todos abstratos basados en dibujos Zentangle que hice el otono pasado. Uno ya esta hecho. Los demas estan en diferentes etapas de ejecucion. La unica manera en que seria capaz de terminar los diez es hacer todos a la vez.

Compre algunos linos montado de McClain's, el tipo que lleva tinta negra en la superficie. Luego pegue mis patrones en los distintos bloques, los deje que se secaron, y empezo a cortar. El primero fue lo que hice para el intercambio de grabados de Baren, 'Loco Motion'.

I've been having fun with a doodle process called 'Zentangle'. The recent the Baren Forum print exchange was an open theme and I wanted to do something whimsical so I used one of my recent Zentangle doodles and was pleased at how nicely it converted into a linocut print. I'm actually working on a series (10 in all) which I will upload as they get finished.

I cannot believe it's been six months since I last wrote in my blog so now it's time to remedy that. In the interim I've learned to do a mezzotint, did an abstract series of linocuts, a few woodcuts, a series of small watercolor abstract studies which will become larger pastel paintings, welcomed another grandchild, made a huge two month US road trip, attended two weddings, among other things ... So forgive me for not writing in my blog.

I'll explain my chicken in a later blog... That will keep me on my toes regarding blogging.

No puedo creer que ha sido seis meses desde escribi en mi blog... entonces ya es hora de remediarlo. En el interine aprendi a hacer mezzotinto, hice una serie de linocut (abstracto), unos pocos grabados en madera, una serie de acuarelas pequenas (estudios de abstracto) que seran pinturas en pastel grandes, di la bienvenida a otro nieto, hice un viaje por auto de dos meses por los EEUU, asisti a dos bodas, entre todo lo demas... entonces pido mil disculpas por no escribirles en mi blog.

Explicare mi pollo en un blog futuro... Asi me compromenteria hacerlo.

'The Wonder of It All' ~ 'Lo maravilloso de todo'

After years of being a scuba instructor, I'd never done anything with divers in it... so I took this opportunity with a Baren relief print exchange, the only rules being that it be a three color reducton relief print on paper sized 10"x7.5". I tried to express that moment when the new diver is overtaken by the wonder of the experience, now fearless, ready to let go of the instructor's hand. I apologize to responsible divers everywhere as the other two are not very good buddies, a little too far apart but it was necessary for the composition...

A reduction print is created from one piece of wood. Since I didn't want any white, the first color pass was not cut into at all. Then, for the violet, all the water area was cut away, the wood was inked and registered on top of the solid turquoise. For the last color, all divers, fish, and most of the reef were cut away, the wood was inked and registered on top of the previous two colors.

We printmakers fondly use the term 'suicide print' for this method since it is so easy to cut too much or, much worse, start with a set edition number in mind and come out with only a few that are properly registered. Because I needed 31, I started with 51 and ended with 43 that I'm proud of... The others are in my 'circular file', better known as the waste basket.

Despues de anos de ser instructora de buceo, nunca habia hecho nada con buzos en mi arte... entonces tome esta oportunidad con un intercambio de Baren, las unicas reglas siendo que sea un grabado en relieve de reduccion de tres colores en papel tamano 25cm por 19 cm. Quise expresar aquel momento en cuando el novato esta tan encantado por la maravilla de la experiencia, ya sin miedo, listo para soltar la mano del instructor. Disculpas a todos los buzos responsables en que dos de ellos no son buenos companeros, siendo un poco lejos uno del otro... pero fue necesario para la composicion.

Una impresion reduccion es creada de un solo pedazo de madera. Como no deseaba tener nada blanco entonces el primer paso de color no llevaba ninguin corte. Luego para la violeta, todo el area de agua fue cortado, la madera fue entintada y registrada encima de la turquesa solida. Para el ultimo color, los buzos, los peces, y la mayor parte del arrecife fueron cortados, la madera fue entintada y registrada encima de los anteriores dos colores.

Nosotros los que hacemos grabados carinosamente utilizamos la palabra 'suicidio' para este metodo porque es tan facil cortar demasiado o, peor, comenzar con una edicion fija en la mente y salir con solo unas pocas que son registradas apropiadamente. Como me hacian falta 31, comence con 51 y termine con 43 que me enorgullecen... Los demas estan en mi archivo 'circular', mejor conocido como el basurero.

Anther scratchboard piece... Since I've worked so long with one color in my printmaking, I find this medium very easy. I started doing this because I wanted to practice fine lines for possible engraved woodcuts but I'm finding I like the immediacy of this... and no printing or editioning later.

Otra obra hecha en scratchboard... Ya que he trabajado tanto tiempo monocromaticamente en grabado, encuentro este medio muy facil. Empece el scratchboard porque quise practicar cortando lineas finitas para grabados pero descubri que me gusta la rapidez de trabajar asi... y nada de imprinta y ediciones luego.

'Zuni'

I've been working on some scratchboard art pieces. This is the first of a miniature series of Southwestern historic pottery, a Zuni Pueblo jar from the 1880s. The board is tiny, just 3"x4", and took a bit of time to complete.

'Flying South' ~ 'Volando hacia el sur'

New Mexico has a magic place called Bosque de Apache National Wildlife Refuge where each fall thousands upon thousands of birds (sandhill cranes, Arctic geese, myriad species of ducks) gather to winter. Feeding birds may erupt in explosions of wings at a moments notice and, at dusk, flight after flight of geese and cranes return to roost in the marshes. It's an awesome sight which should be experienced and was my inspriation.

This simple little black and white woodcut was done for the SSNW09 print exchange, a twice annually exchange celebrating the solstice.

En el estado de Nuevo Mexico (EEUUA) hay un sitio magico llamado El Refugio Nacional del Bosque de Apache a lo cual millares de pajaros migran cada otono (grullas sandhill, gansos articos, una variedad de patos) para pasar el invierno. De golpe habran explosiones de alas y, a la nochecer, vuelo tras vuelo de gansos y grullas vuelven para descansar en los pantanos. Es tan impresionante verlo y me inspiro.

Este grabado sencillo en blanco y negro fue hecho para el intercambio de grabados del SSNW09, lo cual occure dos veces al ano para celebrar el solsticio.

My blog has been quiet much too long but I have been very busy in the studio. 'The Boat' is my contribution to the typography theme exchange of the Baren forum. I just received my set of prints and am delighted to see such variety from so many talented printmakers. Soon the entire collection will be posted and you will be able see the collection here.

Years ago, while posted in the Middle East, I picked up an applique tapestry with this image in the Cairo cloth souk (market). Typically this type of art is an artistic version of a verse from the Koran. Unfortunately the seller did not know what it said but if there are any of you out there that do know, please comment.

Mi blog ha sido demasiado quieto recientamente pero si he estado ocupadisima en el estudio. 'La Lancha' es mi contribucion al intercambio recien de Baren forum, el tema siendo la tipografia. Acabo de recibir mi coleccion y estoy encantada de ver tanta diversidad de tantos artistas talentosos. Pronto estara en la galeria de Baren and podran ver la coleccion aqui.

Hace anos, mientras un puesto en el Oriente Medio, compre en el mercado de tela en Cairo un tapiz que llevaba este imagen. Tipicamente este arte es una version artistica de un versiculo del Coran. Lamentablemente el vendedor no sabia lo que decia pero si hay entre ustedes que si lo sabe... por favor haz un comentario.

'Sunrise' ~ 'Salida del sol'

I find it incredible that 3 months have gone without posting here. I've been way too busy with studio work, woodcut deadlines, and family visits. This little oil painting was started early one morning on my porch, looking east toward Culebra and distant St. Thomas. The morning sky is ever changing and always beautiful with the glow of sun silhouetting palms and yagrumo trees.

The painting is now at the Maji Lina Gallery in Palmer (Rio Grande), which is having their grand opening this Saturday. Hopefully it will find it's way into someone's heart soon.

Me parece increible que hayan pasado 3 meses sin escribir algo aqui. He sido demasiado ocupada con trabajo en el taller, los plazos de varios grabados, y visitas de familia. Este oleo pequeno fue empezado una madrugada en la veranda, con vista al este a Culebra y San Tomas en la lejania. El cielo por la manana siempre cambia y es bellisimo con el brillo del sol detras de las palmas y los yagrumos.

La pintura ya esta en la Galeria Maji Lina en Palmer (Rio Grande), que tiene su apertura formal esta sabado. Ojala que encuentra un duenos pronto que le tiene carino.

I continue my love affair with Alaska. Our recent trip resulted in thousand of photos which I keep sorting through, making decisions what to do next. Thank goodness for digital cameras and laptops. I couldn't afford to take 100 photos of a bear doing next to nothing.

This is my Baren Exchange #42 contribution. The only requirement was the paper size: 3"x9" or 7.5 x 23 cm' woodcut so I decided to do another 'architectural' piece. The historic Russian Orthodox Church (Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel) is actually a rebuilt version of the original that burnt down in 1966. It's rather crowded in by all the other buildings but it still shows beautifully. I rather like how the print came out.

Sigo con mi romance con Alaska. Nuestro viaje recien resulto en miles de fotos las cuales continuamente estoy revisando, haciendo decisiones de que hago proximo. Bendito que haya cameras digitales y computadoras. Nunca podria tomar 100 fotos del mismo oso haciendo casi nada.

Este es mi contribucion para el Intercambio No. 42 del Baren. El unico requisito fue el tamano del papel: 3"x9" o sea 7.5 cm x 23 cm... entonces decidi hacer otro grabado en madera 'estilo arquitecto'. La iglesia historica de los Rusos Ortodoxos (Catedral de San Miguel el Arcangel) realmente es una replica del original que se quemo en 1966. Estoy contento como salio este grabado.

My newest Alaskan inspired print actually came from a roof in downtown Juneau but this woodcut is part of a series of cardinal directions so the title contains the word 'north'. This, for me traveling from Puerto Rico, is very North. I might not have noticed this salmon weather vane but there was one of Alaska's many ravens sitting below it. What could be more iconic for Alaska than a salmon and raven. In fact, I have another woodcut in the works... a raven (which I must have been in another life).

El grabado mas recien mio actualmente viene de un techo en el centro del pueblo de Juneau (Alaska) pero, como este grabado es parte de una serie de las direcciones cardinales, el titlo contiene la palabra 'norte'. Este, para mi viajando de Puerto Rico, es sumamente norte. Quizas no hubiera visto esta veleta de un salmon pero habia un cuervo sentado abajo. Que pudiera ser icono para Alaska que un salmon y un cuervo. En realidad, estoy cortando otro grabado en madera... un cuervo (que pienso que fuera en otra vida).

I'm working on a grouping of small oil paintings for the opening of the new art gallery in our area. This is the view from my porch, looking east toward the north end of the little Puerto Rican island of Culebra with Lobo and Lobito cays. When we had our sailboat the two cays were a favorite stop if the ocean swells were low. We are looking at both the Atlantic (left/north) and the Caribbean (right/south).

We went on one of the Cruise West ships and, because it was one of the small ships, we were able to go to areas that are inaccessible to the gigantic cruise lines. I read all Belinda Del Pesco's blog entries. She is a fine printmaker and very active artist who inspires a lot of us, especially with her watercolor enhanced ghost prints.

This is my recent 'From My Window', which I printed without ink on a piece of watercolor paper... a ghost print. Then I had fun going back in with watercolor. Because there were some stray ink marks on the white areas, I used an exacto knife to cut out the colored area and mounted that on a piece of Arches 88.

Siempre leo el blog de Belinda Del Pesco. Ella es una excelente artista, muy activa con pinturas y grabados quien inspira a muchos de nosotros, especialmente con sus grabados 'ghost' en que se usa acuarela.

Este es mi grabado recien 'Desde mi ventana', que hice sin tinta en un pedazo de papel acuarela... un grabado 'ghost' o 'fantasma' porque no se ve muy bien. Entonces me diverti aplicando acuarela. A causa de que habian unas manchas de tinta en las areas de blanco, use una navaja tipo 'exacto' para cortar la area de color y la monte en un papel Arches 88.

Let me show you how I make small repairs on my woodcuts. My tools are wood putty and cut up playing cards, the plasticized kind casinos give away free. (Since I'm not playing poker with these, the hole punched in the middle doesn't matter.

Quiero mostrarles como hago pequenas reparaciones en la madera de un grabado. Mis implementos son mascilla para madera y pedacitos de naipes, the tipo plastico que se usan en los casinos que se regalan gratis. (Como no las uso para jugar al poker, el agujero en el centro no me importa.)

First I work the putty with my fingers, according to the directions. I always wear disposable plastic gloves when I do this. I then spread the putty into the area needing repair, pressing firmly as I do so. Before the putty has a chance to set up, I take the small piece of card and smooth the area, working it over and over until it is the same level as the uncut wood surrounding it. The edge of the card is also useful to level the putty application. I toss the cards frequently as they get tacky with putty. With a little patience, this makes sanding later unnecessary, as you can see below...

Primero mezclo la mascilla con los dedos, segun las instrucciones. Siempre lo hago usando guantes plasticos disponibles. En el area que requiere el reparo, firmamente aplico la mascilla. Antes de que se pone duro, tomo una naipe y trabajandola poco a poco la mascilla llega a la misma nivel de la madera no cortado alrededor. El borde de la naipe tambien es util para nivelar la mascilla. Las boto con frequencia porque la naipe se llena con el exceso de mascilla. Con un poco de paciencia, este proceso elimina la necesidad de lijar la mascilla seca mas luego, como se ve abajo.

I'm proofing my latest woodcut for the Baren #41 exchange. I've just removed the paper pattern and notice I've missed cutting a couple of areas. I also need a little wood putty on the right side of the window behind the plant. It's not straight and, though you might not see it, it will bother me greatly in the finished print if I don't take care of it now.

It's 6:30 in the morning and the sky should be blue but the Saharan dust is upon us. It came in late Thursday and has given the entire island a hazy look. Visitors think it is charming... but we in Puerto Rico are warned that those with breathing problems should stay inside in air conditioned splendor. Unfortunately almost everyone I know doesn't have air conditioning so our ceiling fans spread it through the house.

'La Iglesia' ~ 'The Church'

I've using my watercolors this week with two goals in mind. First, it's been several years since I've done any watercolor (embarrassing since I'm a juried member of the Puerto Rican Watercolor Society) and, second, I wanted to work with dramatic light which I want to incorporate into my monochromatic woodcuts.

This is part of Old San Juan's historic San Jose Church, built in 1606, and one of two Gothic churches on the island. I love the play of light at high noon on old Puerto Rican buildings.

He estado pintando con acuarela esta semana con dos propositos. Primero, ha sido varios anos que no lo hago (aunque soy miembra de la Asociacion Acuarelista de Puerto Rico) y segundo queria trabajar con luz dramatica para incorporarla en los disenos monocromaticos de mis grabados en madera.

Este es parte de la Iglesia de San Jose del Viejo San Juan, construido en 1606, y uno de solo dos iglesias goticas en la isla. Me encanta la luz de mediodia vista en las paredes de los edificios antiguos de Puerto Rico.

The Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Washington, is a must see for everyone. While traveling, we just stumbled on this wonderful place. While the exhibition space is modest, the Hot Shop is an experience not to be missed. With good seating and overhead cameras, we were able to see Australian artist Ben Edols work his magic, with the help of the regular museum glass artists. I know you can't all visit but they have a web cam worth watching. If it's not showing when you click this, check the hours for your time zone because its really a treat.

The 'Different Strokes from Different Folks' blog is the wonderful brainchild of artist Karin Jurick. It's a bi-weekly challenge to us artists to all create from the same photograph. Never being quick on the draw, no pun intended, I've had the Week 1 Challenge 'My Jack' floating around the studio and .... finally ... he's done. There have been more than 20 challenges to date. These are supposed to be done within a two week time frame. Somehow that doesn't work for me but the inspiration does ... eventually. If you need some of that inspiration, I suggest visiting that site. There might just be something that sets you to carving...

My 'Griffin' is not new to you but my news is... He received an Honorable Mention in Printmaking at the recent East End Art Guild's 10th Annual Juried Exhibition. Again, I was the only printmaker so it is an honor to be included after some tough jurying by Puerto Rican artists Francisco Rodon, Carlos Davila Rinaldi, and Nelson Sambolin. Hurrah once again for printmakers! If you get a chance, the show is at the Centro de Arte Angel 'Lito' Pena (Humacao) until 27 February. It's a great show!

This roadrunner lives in the space between my parents' home and the neighbors', a 10' X 30' patch of juniper and holly. We are all so accustomed to each other, he is a very cooperative model. I was so pleased to be able to take dozens of photos... he'll also become a woodcut but probably not this shot as most wouldn't recognize him without his tailfeathers!

Estamos tan acostumbrados el uno al otro que resulta ser un model sumamente cooperativo. Felizmente tome docenas de fotos... el sera tambien un grabado en madera pero probablemente no este foto como la mayoria no lo reconocera sin sus plumas extremas.

After two months of travel, I'm back home in my studio. I expect these deer will find themselves the subject of a woodcut. We spied them along the dusty road in the Bosque de Apache National Wildlife Refuge, just 20 miles south of Socorro, New Mexico. It's a haven for migrating birds, northern visitors seeking warmer winter climes. The best time to visit is sunrise and sunset for the 'fly out' and 'fly in' of the birds. Of course, we were there around noon so saw few birds (cranes, geese) but we did catch these shy deer cautiously watching me approach with my camera.

Despues de dos meses de viaje, estoy de nuevo en mi estudio. Espero que estes ciervos sean models para un grabado de madera. Los habiamos espiado al lado del camino polvoriento en el Bosque de Apache National Wildlife Refuge (parque nacional) a solo 32 kilometros al sur de Socorro, Nuevo Mexico. Es un refugio para aves migrando para el invierno del norte lejano al clima mas templado. El mejor tiempo para visitar es el amanecer y el atardecer para el vuelo en masa de los parajos. Claro... estuvimos alla al mediodia entonces vimos pocos aves (garzas, gansos) pero si espiabamos estes ciervos timidos vigilandome acercandoles con mi camera.

Recently I returned to oil painting. I'm having a one-woman show in February and will be combining my smaller woodcuts with small paintings. It will be fun curating my prints to fit with the 'ocean' paintings.

Recientemente empeze de nuevo pintando en oleo. En febrero tendre una exhibicion sola y planeo combinar mis grabados en madera con pinturas pequenas. Seria interesante combinar los grabados con pinturas del mar.

Happy news!!! Three of my recent prints were accepted into the 10th Annual East End Art Guild Juried Exhibition here in Puerto Rico. I was the only printmaker so the competition among watercolors, oils and acrylics was fierce. We had three jurors, all well-known Puerto Rican artists: Francisco Rodon, Carlos Davila and Nelson Sambolin. I don't have the numbers but there were less than 60 pieces accepted... so hurrah for printmakers! We can compete with the big guys.

This little piece that made it in was created for a recent Baren exchange so many of you readers actually own it. The other two pieces were my 'Antorcha', another Baren exchange piece, and 'The Griffin', a Solstice exchange piece, both of which many of you may have.

Felices noticias!!! De mis grabados en madera recientes hay tres que fueron aceptados al Decima Exhibicion Anual Jurado del East End Art Guild. Era la unica que presento grabados en este competicion dura entre acuarelas, oleos, y acrilicos. Tuvimos 3 jueces, todos artistas Puertorriquenos bien reconocidos: Francisco Rodon, Carlos Davila, y Nelson Sambolin. No tengo en mano los datos exactos pero habian menos de 60 obras aceptadas... entonces un gran OLE para artistas de grabados. Si podemos competir entre los grandes del arte.

Este es una de ellas y como fue hecha para un intercambio recien de Baren hay muchos de vosotros que lo tienen en casa. Las otras dos fueron 'Antorcha', otra de un intercambio de Baren, y 'El Grifo', de un intercambio del Solsticio.

This black and white print was created for the Chinese New Year of the Rat. The inspiration came from animal shapes seen in our billowing Caribbean clouds. To enhance the 'escape', I had the clouds scudding one way and the sailboat fleeing in the opposite direction.

Este fue un estudio de una hora en lienzo pintado con un geso gris. El color gris ayuda en establecer los valores medianos.

At the El Yunque Rainforest last month I was able to cut my wood block for the Baren print exchange. It was a perfect way to demonstrate how woodcuts evolve, making the tourists realize just how complex a relief print can be, so unlike computer generated art today. When I return from my New Mexico stay, I'll be printing this using a lovely beige handmade paper with black ink and gold powder... very elegant for a change!

El mes pasado en El Bosque Lluvial de El Yunque pude cortar la madera para el intercambio de grabados Baren. Fue el modo perfecto de demostrar como se hacen grabados, haciendo mas sabios a los turistas sobre la manera enrededada de un grabado en relieve, tan diferente del arte generado en la computadora hoy dia. The monthly eBay Nibblefest Art Contest is on again. My entry this month is a rather unlovely 'Iguana' watercolor with an acrylic background... I guess it is properly a 'mixed media' piece. I don't expect many bidders, as this month's 'reptile' theme is not your average cup of tea. But he will go to an 'aficionado' of the cold blooded animal world who will happily give him a home.

Nibblefest rules are that each artist put up one piece which follows the theme ('reptile' this month) and be available for auction at the rock bottom starting price of 99 cents. Last month's piece went to a lovely person in Florida...

The Sierra Club is a sponsor of the Festival del Tinglar in Luquillo at the end of April. It is in celebration of the new ecological nature preserves along the northeast of Puerto Rico where the turtles hatch. Our group from the monthly El Yunque art exhibit will have a booth. I'm not sure art is really a hot seller at this event. There will be a parade (children in turtle costumes), food, and artisans. I wanted to have something for the children... so I came up with this little baby leatherback. In situations like this I have two prices. For adults, they pay full price. If they are accompanied by a child, they only pay $2.00. It always gets some smiles but they also buy.

Dolls have never been my thing. The only doll I remember playing with when I was young was Bonny Braids, baby daughter of Dick Tracy and Tess Truehart, given to me by Santa. Most of the time I played outside with my friends.

A mi nunca me gustaron mucho los munecos. De nina recuerdo jugando con solo uno, Bonny Braids, hijita de los caracteres Dick Tracy y Tess Truehart del Los Angeles Times dijujos dominicales, un regalo de Santa Claus. La mayoria del tiempo jugaba afuera con mis amigos.

So imagine my dilemma when I had to come up with a doll for a recent women's exhibition. How could I relate to this?
Then I recalled I loved drawing paper dolls, especially designing new clothes using crayons, pencils and scissors... and the creative juices started.

Entonces pueden imaginar mi dilema cuando tenia que presentar un muneco para una exhibicion recien. Como pude relacionarme con esto? De repente recorde que me encantaba jugar con los munecos de papel, especialmente disenandoles ropa nueva con crayolas, lapices, y tijeras... y la creatividad empezo.

I am, after all, an artist who works with paper, I have ratty proofs all over the studio, and I tend to wear black a lot to hide my ink stains! So here you have my 'doll' for the doll exhibit at the annual Women's Show in Humacao, Puerto Rico.

This print was my entry in a recent 2008 international solstice print exchange, the theme being mythology. It's done with burnt umber ink on white rice paper and then dry gold pigment brushed small areas. This was applied right after pulling the print so the dry gold powder adhered nicely to the tacky ink.

Este grabado fue mi contribucion a un intercambio internacional de grabados del solsticio, el tema siendo mitologia. Fue hecho con una tinta umber bien oscuro en papel (arroz) blanco y entonces puse en ciertas partes un pigmento de oro en polvo con un pincel. Lo aplique inmediatamente despues de sacar el grabado para que el polvo adhere bien a la tinta viscosa.

'A Western Chinese New Year'

This print was made for a Wet Canvas printmaking exchange. The theme was the Chinese New Year. Being somewhat tired of the more traditional animals, I decided to make a print with a 'southwestern' flavor. Unfortunately, I was unable to find anything in the American Southwest that would work for 'monkey' so borrowed the Central American spider monkey. So the animals are: field mouse (rat), roadrunner (rooster), coyote (dog) javelina (pig), lizard (dragon), rattlesnake (snake), mustang (horse), bighorn sheep (sheep), spider monkey (monkey), longhorn bull (ox) puma (tiger), and jackrabbit (hare).

Este grabado fue hecho para un intercambio de grabados en Wet Canvas. El tema era el Ano Nuevo Chino. Un poco cansada de los animales mas tradicionales, decidi hacer mi grabado con sabor del sudoeste. Desgraciadamente no podia encontrar nada adecuado para 'mono' ... por eso use el mono arana centroamericano. Entonces los animales son: raton (rata), correcamino (gallo), coyote (perro), javelina (jabali), legarto (dragon), serpiente de cascabel (culebra), mustango (caballo), carnero (carnero), mono arana (mono), ganado longhorn (buey), puma (tigre), y liebre grande norteamericano (conejo).

On a recent trip to Albuquerque, I took my camera on my morning walk with my mother. Some of you may recall the photograph I posted here last year. I loved the image so much, I decided to do repeat it in oil, with some judicious editting allowed with a brush but not a lens.

Robert Liberace is a fabulous artist and a wonderful, generous instructor. Last month we had him down here in Puerto Rico for a 5-day figurative painting workshop. It has been years since I've painted seriously in oils, having spent so much time these last few years with my printmaking.

Day One was a morning demo by Rob and an afternoon session where we worked blocking in shadows and trying to forget about the shapes hidden by shadows. Definitely a challenge!

Robert Liberace es un artista fabuloso y un instructor genial y generoso. El mes pasado estaba aqui para una semana de pintura figurativa. Ha sido anos que no pinto en oleo seriamente como estoy haciendo grabados casi exclusivamente esos dias.

Dia Uno teniamos una demonstracion por Rob y por la tarde pintabamos usando el concepto tener las sombras como una sola forma sin pensar en los detalles dentro de esas mismas sombras. Dificil en el maximo!

Day 2 was another demo by Rob and an afternoon session where we got a little more detailed but still thinking in terms of shapes and not details.

Dia Dos tuvimos otra demonstracion por Rob y por la tarde pintabamos con mas detalle pero todavia pensando en terminos de formas y no detalles.

Wednesday was my 'crying' day. Again we had a demo and then got to spend the afternoon with the face... ARRGGG!!! This face was painted and wiped off all afternoon long. I was ready to give away my brushes and get back to my beloved knives. What a frustrating day!!!

Miercoles era mi dia de 'lagrimas'. Otra vez una demo y luego pasabamos la tarde con la cara... PUCHICA!!! Esta cara fue pintada y quitada toda la tarde. Estaba con deseos de regalar mis pinceles y regresar a mis navajas queridas de grabado. Que dia tan frustrante!!!

The last two days there was no demo. Instead we had the same model and did an intensive study. Rob painted along with us so I spent most of my time wandering between my easel and his, absorbing his 'how' of doing and trying to incorporate it into my piece.

Los dos ultimos dias no habia una demo. En cambio tuvimos al mismo model y hicimos un estudio intensivo. Rob pintaba al lado de nosotros... entonces pase la mayoria del tiempo andando entre mi caballete y el suyo, absorbiendo el 'como' de hacerlo de Rob y tratando de incorporarlo en la pieza mia.

Gustave Baumann has long been one of my favorite printmakers. While in Santa Fe early this month I took advantage of a modest exhibition of his work at the New Mexico Museum of Art. It was thrilling to see his plates, prints, and marionettes. Though I was disappointed that it was a small showing (only one room), it is well worth the visit the next time you are in Santa Fe. It will run through September 2010.

I had planned to spend time walking our famous Canyon Road later that day, enjoying all the galleries, but the wind was bitter, too cold for one unaccustomed to northern winter weather. Perhaps the next time...

Mientras estuve en Santa Fe este mes tenia la oportunidad de ver una exhibicion pequena de sus obras en el Museo de Arte de Nuevo Mejico. Fue tremendo ver las placas, grabados, y marionetas. Aunque senti frustracion por el tamano de la exhibicion (solo una sala) vale la pena verla la proxima vez que visiten a Santa Fe. Durara hasta el septiembre de 2010.

Tenia buenas intenciones de caminar por el famoso Canyon Road gozandome de todas las galerias pero el viento era feroz, demasiado frio para gente como yo no acostumbrada a la temporada de invierno del norte. Quizas la proxima vez...

I revisited my models, the Canadian geese that live through the winter at the Rio Grande Nature Center. Driving around in the North Valley of Albuquerque and the adjoining village of Corrales, you can see huge flocks of these birds settled in fields full of the remains of hay and alfalfa. They will be here until spring when they head north again to Canada... very handsome birds which I will need to use for another woodcut.

Visite mis modelos, los Gansos Canadienses, que viven durante el invierno alrededor del Centro de Naturaleza del Rio Grande. Andando por el Valle del Norte de Albuquerque y el pueblito contiguo de Corrales se ve bandadas enormes de estos pajaros poblando el campo lleno de los restos de heno y alfalfa. Quedaran aqui hasta la primavera cuando regresaran al norte a Canada... unos pajaros hermosos los cuales tendre que usar una vez mas como modelos para otro grabado en madera.

I spent December and the first part of January in my home state of New Mexico. Though I had planned to do some art, somehow family pleasantly got in the way. Living so far away, these visits are a welcome renewal of my connections.

Here is the church on the plaza in Albuquerque's Old Town, San Felipe de Neri Church. Founded in 1793, it is the oldest surviving building in the city.

Pase todo diciembre y el primer parte de enero en mi estado de Nuevo Mexico. Aunque pense en hacer algo de arte, de una manera o otra asuntos placenteros de familia me destraian. Viviendo tan alejada, esas visitas renuevan mis conecciones.

Aqui les tiene la iglesia en la plaza del parte historico de Albuquerque, la Iglesia de San Felipe de Neri. Fundada en 1793, es el edificio mas viejo en el ciudad que nos queda.

I am over the moon!!! I recently entered several of my prints in the only yearly juried show here in Puerto Rico and seven were accepted!!! Because the competition is pretty much the more traditional paintings (oils, watercolors, pastels) and sculpture, I'd not entered my prints before, feeling they may not hold up well. It turns out that all three jurors are artist professors at the Universidad Sagrado Corazon which has a very strong printmaking program and are very receptive to printmaking! Two woodcuts, one linocut, two monotypes, and two monoprints ... now to frame them appropriately for the show in February 2008.

Estoy sumamente feliz!!! Recientamente entre varios grabados mios en la exhibicion anual jurada, la unica de este tipo en Puerto Rico, y siete grabados fueron elegidos! A causa de que la competicion usual es de pinturas (oleos, acuarelas, pastel) y escultura, nunca presente mis grabados antes, pensando que no valdrian. Resulta de que los jueces son artistas profesoras en la Universidad Sagrado Corazon, la cual tiene un programa de arte de grabados muy intensivo. Las tres fueron muy receptivas al grabado! Dos grabados de madera, un linocut, dos monotipos y dos monoprints ... ahora a enmarcarlos bien para la exhibicion en enero de 2008.

It fascinates me the way the thorny edges of a cactus cast shadows on each other. I cut this piece from all-shina ply and hand-printed it with a dark chocolate colored Daniel Smith oil-based relief ink on textured mulberry paper (50% Kozo, 50% recycled paper). The paper is a current favorite of mine and has a slight yellow cast with grey flecks which enhance the organic feel. This print is part of the Baren print collection to be housed at the Art Museum of the University of Kentucky at Lexington.

Me fascina como los bordes espinosos de un cactu dejan sombras unas sobre las otras. Corte esta pieza de una madera 'all-shina ply' and saque el grabado usando tinta Daniel Smith (oil-based) que tiene un color chocolate bien rico. El papel es mi favorito en esos dias ... el dicho 'natural mulberry' que contiene 50% fibra Kozo y 50% papel reciclado. El papel tiene un color un poco amarillo con manchitas color gris que dan enfasis al sentido organico del grabado. Este grabado es parte de la coleccion de Baren que sera localizado en el Museo de Arte de la Universidad de Kentucky en el recinto de Lexington.

A cactus woodcut is taking form under my knives. The photo is from a previous trip to the White Sands area of New Mexico. My 'studio space' is the dining table here in Vermont. Tomorrow I'll do a pencil rubbing as a proof. I won't be using ink until we return home to Puerto Rico later in the month.

It has been overcast and rainy most of the time and the locals lament the lack of color this year. However, being accustomed to lush tropical green all year, this is a glorious experience for us non-locals...

Glorious fall ... I've been busy in my studio with a lot of projects but, finally, we are off on a quest to find gold... the beauty of fall foliage. We started in Florida Wednesday, driving up through various states. The drive north began with this leaf I spotted in South Carolina and it's been getting better the further north we go. Tonight we rest in New Jersey and tomorrow the visual feast will begin... in Vermont.

Inking a solar plate is the same as inking any intaglio plate, the only difference is that it's a little easier to flip out of your hands because it is so lightweight.

Aplicando tinta a una plancha solar es lo mismo que cualquier plancha intaglio, la unica diferencia es que es facil tirarla al piso porque es sumamente liviana.

The first step is smearing the ink all over the surface, making sure it goes in all the small crevices. I like to use small pieces of old mat board for this. If using Akua-Kolor intaglio ink, it's best to stir it up, deep from the bottom, before using as I find it tends to settle a bit.

Primero hay que untar la tinta por todas partes, asegurandose de que entra en todos las grietas. Me gusta usar pedazos pequenos de 'mat board' para esto. Si estan usando tinta Akua-Kolor, es mejor revolverla bien antes de usarla, hasta el fondo, porque tiene una tendencia de separarse un poco.

Next I use the dirtier tarltan to remove most of the ink. As you can see there is still ink on the clear parts of the plate. Then I use the cleaner tarltan to take off the rest of the ink. Tarltan comes heavily starched and lightly so. I prefer the lighter. Either way, wiping a plate takes some practice or you can remove too much ink resulting in a very light, unevenly inked print.

Luego uso el 'tarltan' mas sucio para quitar la mayoria de la tinta. Como se puede ver todavia hay tinta en las partes claras de la plancha. Entonces uso el 'tarltan' mas limpio para quitar el resto de la tinta. Tarltan viene con mucha almidon o con poca. Prefiero el con poquito. De todos modos, limpiando una plancha toma un poco de practica o se puede quitar demasiado tinta resultando en un grabado con lineas ligeras o desiguales.

'Ceiba's Church', 4.25"x4.25", original drawing & solar plate print

My latest print, 'Ceiba's Church', is a solar print on Fabriano Uno paper, using Akua-Kolor intaglio ink (lamp black). It first started as a pen and ink drawing, which was then reversed onto a transparency. I prefer the softer look of the print over the stark black and white of the original.

These are my favorite photographs taken when we visited Abo (accent on the o), a part of the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument in New Mexico. The Abo Pass Trail also has a colorful history but is now a quiet stretch of a two-lane state highway.

My contribution for the Baren #32 Print Exchange, which is collated and waiting for the last prints. In this woodcut I wanted to give the dense feel of tropical vegetation with it's old trees, vines, and bromeliads. Fortunately with El Yunque National Forest just a few miles away, I have plenty of inspiration.

En este grabado de madera quizo dar la sensacion de la vegetacion densa de la selva tropical con los arboles viejos, las enredaderas, y los bromeliad. Afortunadamente con el Parque Nacional El Yunque solo unas millas distante, tengo mucha inspiracion.

I love getting newsletters from Dave Bull (see list on right), a fabulous printmaker living and working in Japan. Not only are his printmaking updates always interesting but I also get some neat stamps. I saved many of them and gave them to a young stamp collector but this one just need to be played with. Plein aire painting is always a challenge, especially for me. I don't mind the people watching... that always seems to animate me. However, I find the heat and the glare on the canvas somewhat disturbing because I feel I'm painting duller than I should be. But when I get home in the studio I'm pleasantly surprised that the painting 'works'.

This was done at Luquillo Beach, just minutes from my home. What attracted me was the dappled shadows on the sand from the enormous coconut palms.

Pintando al aire libre siempre es un reto, especialmente para mi. No me molesta la gente que me mira... parece que me anima. Sin embargo, encuentro que el calor y el reflejo del sol en el lienzo me turban porque siento que estoy pintando con colores menos brillante que deberia. Pero al llegar al estudio estoy felizmente asombrada de que la pintura 'funciona'.

Este fue hecho en la playa de Luquillo, unos pocos minutos de la casa. Lo que me atrayo era la sombra en la arena de los cocos enormes.

'Nitrogen', woodcut using Graphic Chemical process black on kozo paper/'Nitrogeno', grabado en madera con tinta Graphic Chemical process black en papel kozo.

'Nitrogen' was my contribution for the 2007 Periodic Table of Elements Printmaking Project. The requirements were a 6" square print using the element's letter and number. Nitrogen is N and 7. In researching I initially wanted to deal with diving (as a former scuba instructor) and the effects on the body of nitrogen under pressure... but discovered nitrogen is found in all living things and thus changed the focus of my print.

'Nitrogeno' fue mi contribucion para el Proyecto de Grabado de la Tabla Periodica de Elementos 2007. Los requisitos era un grabado tamano 15cm cuadrado usando la letra y el numero del elemento. Nitrogeno es N y 7. Inicialmente quise un tema que trataba de buzear (como soy maestra de buzeo jubilada) y los efectos de nitrogeno baja presion en el cuerpo... pero descubri que el nitrogeno esta presente en todo que vive y entonces cambie el foco de mi grabado.

The Rio Grande Nature Center has wonderful paths that take you under the old cottonwoods to the river. In June most of the native flowers have already bloomed but there are still elegant remnants.

The famous Rio Grande River around Albuquerque has more water than I remember in a long time. It is a joy to see in a place where water is so valued. Although it is running fast there are quiet spots, like near the Nature Center.

Visiting family in Albuquerque always means early morning walks in the neighborhood. Because New Mexico has had so much snow and rain this year, the day lilies and hollyhocks abound. When I can't draw or make prints, I love to take photos, especially 'flower portraits'.

This is a very common sight in Latin America. Just outside every school there seems to be an ice cream vendor, waiting as the children leave for home. This was a forbidden after-school treat when we lived in Mexico.

Esta es una escena muy comun en America Latina. En las meras afueras de cada colegio parece que hay un vendedor de helados, esperando la salida de los ninos para sus hogares. Siempre fue una delicia prohibida por mi mama cuando viviamos en Mejico.

I am exhausted! Today the 'Vamos a Grabar' show was hung... all 91 framed pieces! The Centro de Arte has a wonderful hanging system which makes it much easier. The first step is to place the art in the desired spot against the wall. Then, climbing on a ladder, the wires are attached to a metal strip. You can 'eyeball' the position looking over the art on the floor.

Monday I go in to straighten up the frames with some tacky tape and put on the labels. They also need to put up the banner outside the building. ((Sigh)) I am dying to get back into the studio and create!!! Soon, I tell myself!!!

Estoy cansadisima!!! Hoy colgue la exhibicion 'Vamos a Grabar'... 91 piezas en total! El Centro de Arte tiene una sistema lindisima que hace el trabajo mucho mas placentero. La primera estapa es poner el arte en la posicion deseada en el piso al lado de la pared. Entonces, subiendo la escalera, se mete el alambre en una tira metal. Se puede ver bien donde ponerlo mirando abajo al arte en el piso.

Lunes regreso para poner bien a los marcos y tambien a los 'labels' con la informacion. Los del Centro tienen que poner el rotulo por las afueras del edificio. ((un gran suspiro)) Estoy muy ansiosa de estar de nuevo en el estudio... creando!!! Pronto, digo a mi mismo!!!

I'm winding down on the framing for the 'Vamos a Grabar!' ('Let's Print!) show. I have all the Baren Print Exchange #30 in one corner of the living room and 2/3 of the rest patiently waiting the final pieces ... Opening day is June 1 and I still have to do signage and descriptions. Fortunately I don't have to do the catalog! I can't wait until all this is done and I can start creating again... my mind is aboil with ideas.

Another abstract piece done with Akua-Kolor inks for the summer exhibition at the Centro de Arte in Humacao, Puerto Rico. I'm busy framing the pieces today and hope to have them finished by Wednesday, when we have friends visiting from Washington state.

I've been going through works for the exhibition and decided to include this one. Placing rice paper on a dirty inking area, then pulling the paper off, there were some delightful sepia shapes that needed a little enhancing with brushed-on Akua-Kolor inks. I then pasted the rice paper onto a 90# watercolor paper .. and that's that! An abstract!

Revisando obras para la exhibicion, decidi incluir a esta. Poniendo una hoja de papel japonesa de arroz en el vidrio sucio que uso para la tinta, luego sacando el papel, asomaban unas formas color sepia que necesitaban un aumento con tintas Akua-Kolor aplicadas con un pincel. Entonces pegue el papel a otro de acuarela (90#) ... y ya! Un abstrato!

Progress continues on the crab reduction woodcut. I’ve added a dinitro orange and then a fine detail of quinacridone magenta, both Akua-Kolor. (I love all the quinacridones, especially the gold.) I have to check to see how many actually survived the final fourth color. I think I have 15 acceptable prints.

Hay mas progreso en el grabado de madera del cangrejo. Anadi una naranja dinitro y luego unos detalles de quinacridone magenta, ambos Akua-Kolor. (Me encantan todos los quinacridones, especialmente el oro o dicho ‘gold’.) Tengo que averiguar cuantos han sobrevivido el cuarto y final color. Creo que tenga 15 impresiones buenas.

A reduction woodcut print of a crab is about to debut. The wood is all-shina ply 6”x8” and I’m using Akua-Kolor ink with a touch of paste. So far I’ve gotten two colors down, a hansa yellow with an overlay of diarylide yellow. The light in the studio is now fading and our dinner chicken is almost ready, so I will continue tomorrow. I don’t do reductions frequently so am pleased that of 25 sheets of paper, I now have 24. Not too bad…

Un grabado de madera estilo reduccion de un cangrejo esta por estrenarse. La madera es all-shina ply tamano 15cmx20cm y estoy usando tinta Akua-Kolor con un poquito de pegue. Hasta ahora tengo dos colores puestos, un amarillo hansa con amarillo diarylide encima. La luz en mi taller ya esta yendo y el pollo para nuestra cena esta casi al comerlo, entonces continuare manana. No hago reducciones con frecuencia por eso estoay satisfecha de que tengo todavia 24 hojas de un total de 25. No esta mal…

3. My first school experience was at a huge Mexico City school at the tender age of 3 (I don't remember anything so it must have been good).

4. I've traveled to and from Spain when I was 7, 11 and 15 ... via long freighter trips with various stops along the way... once at Cuban sugar cane fields, once at the Canary Islands (to bury the ship's captain and wait for a new one).

5. I can never remember a punchline in a joke so I'm always a great audience, which delights my husband.

6. I hate licorice and Brussel sprouts. Please don't give me your recipe! ... icky!

7. My math skills are abominable... but I am a nice person inspite of it.

Sunset from our porch is always spectacular. The house faces east toward the island of Culebra and the U.S. Virgin Islands, so we never see the sun actually set... but we almost always have a colorful light show on the clouds as the evening begins and the coquis begin their crazy chirping.

La casa esta orientada hacia el este con una vista de la isla de Culebra y las Islas Virgenes de los EEUU, entonces nunca vemos la puesta actual ... pero casi siempre tenemos un estreno maravilloso de colores y luces en las nubes mientras empieza la noche y los coquis cantan su serenata loca.
